Meaning & Translation
Verse 1
Jai Shri Hari Radhe Radhe. Today I will narrate a secret story, the tale of Devshayani Ekadashi. Listen with devotion.
Verse 2
Long ago, Dharmaraj Yudhishthir asked Lord Krishna, 'O Madhav, what is the significance of the Ekadashi in Ashadh Shukla Paksha? Kindly tell me.'
Verse 3
Shri Krishna smiled and replied, 'Yudhishthir, this is the day when I, Vishnu, enter yogic slumber for the next four months.'
Verse 4
The gods rest, and only devotees remain awake. This marks the beginning of Chaturmas.
Verse 5
Then Shri Krishna shared a story. Long, long ago, during Satya Yuga, there lived a righteous king named Mandhata.
Verse 6
Powerful yet humble, his reign was prosperous and blessed. But a time came when for three years straight, no rain fell.
Verse 7
Fields turned barren, cattle suffered, and people were plunged into sorrow.
Verse 8
The king performed yagnas, gave in charity, consulted sages, but no solution was found.
Verse 9
One day, while wandering in the forest, he met an aged sage, Rishi Angira.
Verse 10
The king folded his hands and asked, 'Gurudev, I am a just and kind ruler, then why has this calamity struck?'
Verse 11
The sage replied, 'King, a Shudra in your kingdom is performing penance. In Satya Yuga, only Brahmins were permitted to undertake Tapasya.'
Verse 12
Until this ascetic ceases, rain shall not come.' The king was stunned. 'Gurudev, but he is a devotee of God. Has devotion itself become a crime?'
Verse 13
The sage said, 'This is the Dharma of the age. Violating it brings adversity.'
Verse 14
The king was torn in a dilemma: on one side, the suffering of his people; on the other, a soul immersed in divine meditation.
Verse 15
The king spoke, 'O sage, he is my subject, like a son to me. How can I commit the sin of harming a devotee? Please guide me to another way.'
Verse 16
The sage's heart softened. He said, 'O King, you are a true upholder of Dharma. Listen now.'
Verse 17
'Observe the vrat of Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi, known as Devshayani Ekadashi. On this day, Lord Narayana enters yogic sleep.'
Verse 18
And those who fast with pure devotion, their obstacles dissolve on their own.
Verse 19
The king took the vow. He fasted without water, stayed awake all night, offering lamps to Tulsi with devotion.
Verse 20
And then, the very next day, rain poured. Earth turned green again. The people rejoiced, and the kingdom echoed with joy.

Victory to Lord Vishnu! Jai Shri Hari! Do you now understand the essence of this story?

When faith sleeps, faith must awaken. Dharma is not merely a rule; it's a balance of compassion and wisdom.
