ज्येष्ठ मास की शुक्ल पक्ष की एकादशी ‘गायत्री’ जयंती के रूप में मनाई जाती है। यद्यपि भारत के दक्षिणी हिस्से में श्रावण मास की पूर्णिमा गायत्री जयंती के रूप में मनाई जाती है। वहां गायत्री जयंती को ‘संस्कृत’ दिवस के रूप में भी मनाया जाता है। इन्हें ज्ञान और विवेक की देवी माना जाता है।

देवी गायत्री से जुड़ी एक पौराणिक कथा है। एक बार ब्रह्मा जी ने लोगों के कल्याण के लिए पृथ्वी लोक पर यज्ञ करने का विचार किया। और, कुछ सोच कर उन्होंने अपना कमल का फूल पृथ्वी लोक की ओर फेंका। कमल का यह फूल पुष्कर में जाकर गिरा। फूल के वहां गिरने से एक तालाब बन गया। ब्रह्मा जी ने उस स्थान पर यज्ञ करने का निश्चय किया। ब्रह्मा जी सहित सभी देवी-देवता यज्ञ में हिस्सा लेने के लिए वहां पहुंच गए। लेकिन उनकी पत्नी सावित्री नहीं पहुंची। यज्ञ के मुहूर्त का समय निकट आता जा रहा था। ऐसे में ब्रह्मा जी ने ‘नंदिनी’ गाय के मुख से देवी गायत्री को प्रकट किया। उन्होंने वहीं उनसे विवाह कर यज्ञ को शुभ मुहूर्त में संपन्न किया।

एक अन्य कथा में यहां ब्रह्मा जी के एक ग्रामीण कन्या गायत्री से भी विवाह का वर्णन है। कुछ समय पश्चात जब देवी सावित्री यज्ञ स्थल पर पहुंची और उन्होंने ब्रह्मा जी के समीप किसी अन्य स्त्री को देखा तो अत्यंत क्रोधित हुईं। उन्होंने ब्रह्मा जी को श्राप देते हुए कहा कि संपूर्ण पृथ्वी लोक पर उनकी कहीं पूजा नहीं होगी। सभी देवताओं ने उनका क्रोध शांत करते हुए श्राप वापिस lene का आग्रह किया। इस पर देवी गायत्री ने कहा कि पृथ्वी लोक में सिर्फ पुष्कर में ही ब्रह्मा जी की पूजा होगी। तब से सिर्फ पुष्कर में ही ब्रह्मा जी की पूजा होती है और उनका एकमात्र मंदिर भी वहीं है।

अन्य पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार गायत्री मंत्र की उत्पत्ति ब्रह्मा जी के मुख से सृष्टि की रचना करते समय हुई थी। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि ब्रह्मा जी ने अपने चार मुखों से गायत्री मंत्र की व्याख्या वेदों के रूप में की। महर्षि वेदव्यास ने वेदों के संपूर्ण ज्ञान को चार वेदों ‘ऋग्वेद’, ‘यजुर्वेद’, ‘सामवेद’ और ‘अथर्ववेद’ के रूप में विभाजित किया। आगे चलकर महर्षि विश्वामित्र ने माता गायत्री को अपनी कठोर तपस्या से प्रसन्न किया और गायत्री मंत्र से उनकी स्तुति की। इस प्रकार वे गायत्री मंत्र के द्रष्टा बने और देवताओं के इस मंत्र को महर्षि विश्वामित्र ने सर्वजन को सुलभ कराया।

सूर्य मंडल में निवास करने वाली देवी गायत्री आद्याशक्ति प्रकृति के पांच स्वरूपों में से एक मानी गई हैं। गायत्री, सावित्री और सरस्वती एक ही ब्रह्मशक्ति का स्वरूप हैं। वेदों की जननी होने के कारण इन्हें ‘वेद’ माता भी कहा जाता है। इसी प्रकार सभी वेदों का सार माने जाने वाले चौबीस अक्षरों के गायत्री मंत्र को मंत्रों का राजा कहा गया है।

सृष्टि के आरंभ में ब्रह्मा जी ने जब सृष्टि की रचना का विचार किया, तो उन्हें एक ऐसी शक्ति की आवश्यकता थी जो ज्ञान और विवेक का आधार बने। तब उन्होंने माँ गायत्री का आह्वान किया। माँ गायत्री के प्रकट होने के बाद ही चारों वेदों का ज्ञान इस संसार को मिला।

The Ekadashi of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Jyeshtha is celebrated as Gayatri Jayanti. However, in the southern parts of India, the full moon day (Purnima) of the Shravan month is observed as Gayatri Jayanti. There, Gayatri Jayanti is also celebrated as 'Sanskrit' Day. She is considered the Goddess of knowledge and wisdom.
Verse 2
There is a mythological story associated with Goddess Gayatri. Once, Lord Brahma decided to perform a Yajna on Earth for the welfare of people. After some thought, he threw his lotus flower towards the Earth. This lotus flower fell in Pushkar. A pond was formed where the flower landed. Lord Brahma decided to perform the Yajna at that spot. All deities, including Lord Brahma, arrived there to participate in the Yajna. However, his wife Savitri did not arrive. The auspicious time for the Yajna was approaching. In such a situation, Lord Brahma manifested Goddess Gayatri from the mouth of the 'Nandini' cow. He married her there and completed the Yajna at the auspicious moment.

In another story, there is a description of Lord Brahma's marriage to a rural girl named Gayatri. Some time later, when Goddess Savitri arrived at the Yajna site and saw another woman beside Lord Brahma, she became extremely angry. She cursed Lord Brahma, saying that he would not be worshipped anywhere on the entire Earth. All the deities requested her to calm her anger and withdraw the curse. Upon this, Goddess Gayatri said that Lord Brahma would only be worshipped in Pushkar on Earth. Since then, Lord Brahma is worshipped only in Pushkar, and his only temple is also there.

According to another mythological story, the Gayatri Mantra originated from Lord Brahma's mouth during the creation of the universe. It is said that Lord Brahma explained the Gayatri Mantra through his four mouths in the form of the Vedas. Maharishi Vedavyas divided the complete knowledge of the Vedas into four Vedas: 'Rigveda', 'Yajurveda', 'Samaveda', and 'Atharvaveda'. Later, Maharishi Vishwamitra pleased Mother Gayatri with his severe penance and praised her with the Gayatri Mantra. Thus, he became the seer of the Gayatri Mantra, and Maharishi Vishwamitra made this mantra of the gods accessible to everyone.

Goddess Gayatri, who resides in the solar sphere, is considered one of the five forms of the primordial energy (Aadyashakti Prakriti). Gayatri, Savitri, and Saraswati are all forms of the same divine power (Brahmashakti). Because she is the mother of the Vedas, she is also called 'Ved Mata'. Similarly, the twenty-four-syllable Gayatri Mantra, considered the essence of all Vedas, is called the king of mantras.

No matter how dense the darkness, a single ray of the sun is enough to dispel it.
