इस दिन सुहागन महिलाओं को सुबह-सुबह स्नान आदि से निवृत होकर अपने मायके से आई साड़ियां और श्रृंगार के समान का उपयोग करना चाहिए। इसके बाद शुभ मुहूर्त के अनुसार माता पार्वती और भगवान शिव के साथ गणेश भगवान की प्रतिमा स्थापित करें। सबसे पहले गणेश पूजा करते हैं। इसके बाद माता पार्वती को 16 श्रृंगार के सामग्री के साथ साड़ी, अक्षत्, दीप, धूप, गंध आदि अर्पित करते हैं। उसके बाद भगवान शिव को भांग, धतूरा, श्वेत फूल, बेल पत्र, धूप और गंध आदि समर्पित करते हैं। हरियाली तीज की कथा सुनते हैं और उसके बाद तीनों लोगों की आरती करते हैं। अंत में सभी भक्तजनों में प्रसाद और पंचामृत का वितरण करते हैं।

हरियाली तीज व्रत में शुद्ध मिट्टी, पीले रंग का कपड़ा, केले के पत्ते, बेल पत्र, शमी के पत्ते, धतूरा, आंकड़े के पत्ते, तुलसी, श्रीफल, कलश, अबीर, चंदन, तेल और घी, कपूर, जनेऊ,धागा, जटा नारियल, चुनरी और साड़ी होना आवश्यक है। इसके अलावा माता पार्वती के श्रंगार में चूडियां, महावर, नथ, कुमकुम, सिंदूर, बिंदी, मेहंदी, बिछुआ, कंघी, नेलपॉलिश आदि सामग्री चाहिए होता है। पंचामृत के लिए दही, चीनी, शहद ,दूध आदि सामग्री होनी चाहिए।

इस दिन निर्जला व्रत रखकर विधि पूर्वक पूजा करने का विधान है। इस व्रत को करवा चौथ से भी कठिन व्रत बताया जाता है।

व्रत का संकल्प लेकर महिलाएं माता की चौकी को सजाती हैं और खुद भी सजती हैं। हरियाली तीज के दिन महिलाएं सुबह घर के काम और स्नान करने के बाद सोलह श्रृंगार करके निर्जला व्रत रखती हैं।

महिलाएं शिवजी और पार्वतीजी की षोडशोपचार पूजा यानी की 16 प्रकार की सामग्री से पूजा करती हैं। इसमें हल्दी, कुंकू, मेहंदी, गंध, पुष्प, नैवेद्य, माला, पान आदि सभी पूजन सामग्री अर्पित करती हैं।

पूजा की सामग्री अर्पित करके के बाद दोनों की आरती उतारी जाती है।

नैवेद्य अर्पण करने के बाद लोगगीत गाती है। झूला झूलती हैं और खुशियां मनाती हैं।

इस दिन व्रत के साथ-साथ शाम को व्रत की कथा सुनी जाती है। कथा के समापन पर महिलाएं मां गौरी से पति की लंबी उम्र की कामना करती है। इसके बाद घर में उत्सव मनाया जाता है और भजन व लोक नृत्य किए जाते हैं।

इस दिन महिलाएं पूरा दिन बिना भोजन-जल के दिन व्यतीत करती हैं तथा दूसरे दिन सुबह स्नान और पूजा के बाद व्रत पूरा करके भोजन ग्रहण करती हैं।

इस दिन स्त्रियों के मायके से श्रृंगार का सामान और मिठाइयां उनके ससुराल भेजी जाती है।

इस दिन हरे वस्त्र धारण करना, हरी चुनरी, हरा लहरिया, हरा श्रृंगार, मेहंदी लगाना, झूला-झूलने का भी रिवाज है। जगह-जगह झूले पड़ते हैं।

इस त्योहार में स्त्रियां हरी लहरिया न हो तो लाल, गुलाबी चुनरी में भी सजती हैं, गीत गाती हैं, मेंहदी लगाती हैं, श्रृंगार करती हैं, नाचती हैं।

हरियाली तीज के दिन अनेक स्थानों पर मेले लगते हैं और माता पार्वती की सवारी बड़े धूमधाम से निकाली जाती है।

Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
On this day, married women should take a morning bath and then use sarees and makeup items received from their maternal home. After this, according to the auspicious time, install the idols of Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, and Lord Ganesha. First, perform Ganesha Puja. Then, offer 16 types of adornment items along with a saree, unbroken rice (akshat), lamp, incense, fragrance, etc., to Goddess Parvati. After that, offer bhang, dhatura, white flowers, bel patra, incense, and fragrance, etc., to Lord Shiva. Listen to the story of Hariyali Teej, and then perform the Aarti of all three deities. Finally, distribute prasad and panchamrit among all devotees.
Verse 2
For the Hariyali Teej fast, pure clay, yellow cloth, banana leaves, bel patra, shami leaves, dhatura, aakde leaves, tulsi, shreephal (coconut), kalash (pot), abeera (gulal), chandan (sandalwood), oil and ghee, camphor, janeu (sacred thread), thread, jata nariyal (husked coconut), chunari (scarf), and saree are essential. Additionally, for Goddess Parvati's adornment, bangles, mahavar (alta), nath (nose ring), kumkum, sindoor (vermilion), bindi, mehendi (henna), bichhua (toe rings), comb, nail polish, etc., are required. For Panchamrit, ingredients like curd, sugar, honey, and milk should be available.
Verse 3
On this day, there is a tradition of observing a fast without water (Nirjala Vrat) and performing puja according to rituals. This fast is considered even more difficult than Karwa Chauth.
Verse 4
After taking the vow of the fast, women decorate the Mother's altar and adorn themselves. On Hariyali Teej, women, after completing household chores and bathing in the morning, observe a Nirjala Vrat after performing Solah Shringar (16 adornments).
Verse 5
Women perform Shodashopchar Puja of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, meaning worship with 16 types of offerings. In this, they offer all puja materials like turmeric, kumkum, mehndi, fragrance, flowers, offerings (naivedya), garlands, betel leaves, etc.

After offering the puja materials, Aarti is performed for both deities.
Verse 7
After offering the Naivedya, folk songs are sung. Women swing on swings and celebrate with joy.
Verse 8
On this day, along with the fast, the story of the fast (Vrat Katha) is heard in the evening. At the conclusion of the story, women pray to Mother Gauri for their husband's long life. After this, a celebration is held at home with bhajans and folk dances.

On this day, women spend the entire day without food and water, and on the second day morning, after bathing and puja, they complete their fast and consume food.

On this day, adornment items and sweets are sent from the women's maternal homes to their in-laws' homes.

On this day, there is also a tradition of wearing green clothes, green chunari, green lehriya, green adornments, applying mehndi, and swinging on swings. Swings are set up in various places.

In this festival, if women do not have green lehriya, they also adorn themselves in red or pink chunari, sing songs, apply mehndi, do makeup, and dance.

On Hariyali Teej, fairs are held in many places, and a grand procession of Mother Parvati is taken out with great fanfare.
