Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
Dhritarashtra asked: O great sage, please tell me about the famous protective armor of Narayana, by which one can move fearlessly.
Verse 2
Shuka replied: O King, I shall now fully describe to you the protective armor of Narayana which is famous in the world. Please listen attentively.
Verse 3
Cleanse your hands with water, likewise clean your feet, and thus be completely purified in all respects.
Verse 4
Wear clean clothes, sit on two seats (Kusha grass and deer skin), perform achamanam (sip water), become purified, restrained, and free from impurities.
Verse 5
I shall reveal the secret, the most secret and hidden (armor), which destroys all enemies, and by which I shall subdue all beings holding weapons.
Verse 6
This Kavacha is supremely sacred, the embodiment of mantras among mantras. By wearing it, one whose mind is firm attains all desires.
Verse 7
Om Hrim Hram, Salutations to Vasudeva. Let all my enemies, like dogs, throw themselves at me (in vain).
Verse 8
Let Brahmins (of degraded conduct) bite me like dogs from behind. Whatever little they harm me, along with those dogs (their followers).
Verse 9
May those obstacles fall upon them from Shiva, who holds the trident. May Narayana's charioteer (Garuda) continuously protect me with his chakra.
Verse 10
May that great protection be fully accomplished for me from all sides. Om, Salutations to Lord Vasudeva.

Those who, with love, bow to Hari's lotus feet, who holds the discus and supports the earth, who holds the conch and brings welfare.

May Hrishikesha protect my tongue, may Vasudeva protect my throat. May Narayana protect my arms, may Madhava protect my heart.

May Vishnu protect my chest, may Madhava protect my abdomen. May Madhava protect my sides, may Madhava protect my back.

May Narayana protect my knees, may Madhava protect my thighs. May Keshava protect my feet, may Keshava protect my entire being.

May Govinda protect me in the East, may Shridhara himself protect me in the Southeast. May Hari protect me in the South, may Madhusudana protect me in the Southwest.

May Padmanabha protect me in the West, and Janardana in the Northwest. May Vamana protect me in the North, and Trivikrama in the Northeast.

May Lakshmisha protect me above, and Gadapani below. May Hari himself protect me in the sky, and Sureshwara in all directions.

May Chakrapani protect me in the morning, and Chakradharaka at noon. May Sharngadhanushka (one who holds the Sharnga bow) protect me in the evening, and Chandraprakashaka (moon-illuminator) at night.

Om Hram Srim, Salutations to Narasimha, the Great Lion, garlanded with flames. Om Hara Hara, Lord of the Earth, Tha Tha, Salutations to Narasimha, Svaha.
