Verse 109
According to a mythological tale, Lord Shri Krishna himself explained the significance of this fast to Dharmaraj Yudhishthira. The Lord said that observing the Putrada Ekadashi fast destroys all sins of the devotee. This fast grants long life and virtuous children.
Verse 110
The Lord further said that in ancient times, King Suketuman ruled in Bhadravatipuri. His queen's name was Champa. They had no children, and thus they remained sorrowful. Due to this sorrow, one day King Suketuman set out towards the forest.
Verse 111
In the forest, when the king felt thirsty, he reached near a lake. There, the king saw many sages and ascetics. The king bowed to all of them and explained his problem.
Verse 112
Then the sages told him that the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Paush is called Putrada Ekadashi. By observing a fast with proper rituals on this day, one obtains worthy progeny.
Verse 113
Following the command of the sages, King Suketuman observed the Putrada Ekadashi fast. After some time, Queen Champa gave birth to a son.
Verse 114
The fast of Ekadashi holds an important place in Hinduism. There are twenty-four Ekadashis every year. When Adhikmas or Malmas occurs, their number increases to 26. The Ekadashi of Shravan Shukla Paksha is named Putrada. Merely by listening to its story, one attains the fruit of the Vajapeya Yagya.
Verse 115
Once, Shri Yudhishthir asked, 'O Lord! What is the name of Shravan Shukla Ekadashi? Please tell me the method of observing its fast and its glory.' Madhusudan (Lord Krishna) replied, 'This Ekadashi is named Putrada. Now, listen to its story peacefully. Merely by listening to it, one attains the fruit of the Vajapeya Yagya.'
Verse 116
At the beginning of the Dvapara Yuga, there was a city named Mahishmati, where a king named Mahijit ruled. However, due to being childless, the king did not find his kingdom enjoyable. He believed that for someone without offspring, both this world and the afterlife are sorrowful. The king made many efforts to attain the joy of a son, but he did not succeed in getting a child.
Verse 117
Seeing old age approaching, the king called the representatives of his subjects and said, 'O people! There is no wealth in my treasury acquired unjustly. Nor have I ever seized the wealth of gods or Brahmins. I have not taken anyone else's trust, and I have nurtured my subjects like my own children. I have punished offenders like sons and relatives. I have never hated anyone. I have treated everyone equally. I always worship the virtuous. Despite ruling righteously in this manner, I have no son. So, I am extremely sorrowful; what could be the reason for this?'
Verse 118
To ponder over King Mahijit's words, the ministers and representatives of the subjects went to the forest. There, they met many great sages and ascetics. They kept searching for a superior ascetic sage to fulfill the king's noble wish. In one ashram, they saw Mahatma Lomash Muni, who was extremely old, a knower of Dharma, a great ascetic, with his mind fixed on the Supreme Being, fasting, having controlled his senses, self-controlled, free from anger, knowing the profound elements of Sanatan Dharma, and a master of all scriptures, from whom one hair fell only after the passing of a Kalpa (eon).
Verse 119
Everyone went and bowed to the sage. Seeing them, the Muni asked, 'For what reason have you come? Undoubtedly, I will do good for you. My birth is solely for the benefit of others; do not doubt this.'
Verse 120
Hearing such words from Lomash Rishi, everyone said, 'O Great Sage! You are more capable than Brahma in knowing our matters. Therefore, please remove our doubt. The righteous King Mahijit of Mahishmati Puri nurtures his subjects like his own children. Yet, he is sorrowful due to being childless.'
Verse 121
They further said, 'We are his subjects. Therefore, we are also saddened by his sorrow. With your darshan (sight), we have full faith that our crisis will surely be resolved, because merely seeing great personalities removes many troubles. Now, please kindly tell us the means for the king to have a son.'
Verse 122
Hearing this conversation, the sage closed his eyes for a while and, knowing the account of the king's previous birth, began to say that this king was a poor Vaishya in his previous birth. Due to being poor, he committed several bad deeds. He used to travel from one village to another for trade. Once, on the Dwadashi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, at noon, while he had been hungry and thirsty for two days, he went to a reservoir to drink water. At the same spot, a recently calved, thirsty cow was drinking water.
Verse 123
The king removed that thirsty cow while it was drinking water and started drinking himself; that is why the king had to endure this sorrow. By remaining hungry on Ekadashi, he became a king, and due to removing the thirsty cow while it was drinking water, he is suffering the sorrow of separation from a son. Hearing this, everyone said, 'O Sage! The scriptures also mention atonement for sins. Therefore, the means by which...'
Verse 124
Please tell us a way by which the king's sin may be destroyed.
Verse 125
Lomash Muni said that on the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Shravan, which is also called Putrada Ekadashi, all of you should observe a fast and keep vigil at night. By doing so, the king's sin from his previous birth will surely be destroyed, and the king will certainly be blessed with a son.
Verse 126
Hearing such words from Lomash Rishi, all the subjects, along with the ministers, returned to the city. And when Shravan Shukla Ekadashi arrived, everyone observed the Putrada Ekadashi fast and vigil according to the Rishi's command.
Verse 127
After this, on the day of Dwadashi, the fruit of this merit was given to the king. By the influence of that merit, the queen conceived, and after the period of gestation, a very radiant son was born to her.
Verse 128
Therefore, O King! This Shravan Shukla Ekadashi was named Putrada (giver of sons). Hence, those who desire the happiness of progeny must observe this fast.
Verse 129
By listening to its glory, a person becomes free from all sins and, after enjoying the happiness of progeny in this world, attains heaven in the afterlife.
Verse 130
Putrada Ekadashi also falls in the bright fortnight of Paush.
