Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
I bow to Lakshmi, the daughter of the ocean of milk, the sovereign of Srirangam, whose servants are all the celestial women, the sole lamp of the world, who bestows wealth through her gentle side-glance upon Brahma, Indra, and Shiva (Gangadhara), the mother of the three worlds, and the beloved of Mukunda (Vishnu).

Salutations to the glorious Goddess.
Verse 4
Salutations to the great Goddess Lakshmi.
Verse 5
We offer our obeisance to Goddess Lakshmi who eradicates all evil forces. Kindly bestow upon wealth, riches and all a prosperous and a better future.
Verse 6
We meditate on the greatest Goddess, who is the divine consort of Lord Vishnu. Kindly bless us with higher intellect, abundance and prosperity.
Verse 7
Om, Hreem, Shreem, Kreem, Kleem, O Goddess Lakshmi, fill my home with wealth, fill it with wealth. Remove my worries, remove them. Swaha.

Verse 9
O Lotus-faced one, O Lotus-eyed one, born from the lotus, O Goddess with lotus eyes, I worship you so that I may attain happiness and prosperity.

Om, Hreem, Hreem, Salutations to Lakshmi and Vasudeva (Lord Vishnu), the divine couple.

Verse 16
We meditate on Lord Vishnu, who is clad in white, who is all-pervading, who is bright like the moon, who has four arms, and who has a benevolent face. We meditate upon him for the removal of all obstacles.
Verse 17
On this auspicious day, endowed with such qualities, for the well-being, stability, victory, longevity, health, and prosperity of our family, for the attainment of the fourfold pursuits of Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha, for the fulfillment of desired wishes, for good progeny, auspicious results, and good fortune, I shall perform the Varalakshmi Puja annually, as prescribed in the Bhavishyottara Purana, to the best of my ability, with Dhyana, Avahana, and Shodashopachara (sixteen forms of worship), for the pleasure of Varalakshmi. As part of this, I shall perform Kalasha Puja. Having worshipped the Kalasha with fragrance, flowers, and unbroken rice, I place my hand over the Kalasha.

At the mouth of the Kalasha resides Vishnu, at its neck Rudra, at its base Brahma, and in its middle, the divine mothers. Within its belly are all the oceans, and the earth with its seven islands. The Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda, and Atharvaveda, along with their Angas (limbs), are all contained within this water-filled Kalasha. May they all come for the worship of Lakshmi, the remover of all sins. O Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Saraswati...

O Narmada, Sindhu, Kaveri (rivers), be present in this water.
Verse 20
O Goddess, seated on a lotus, holding a lotus, worshipped by all worlds, beloved of Narayana, be always pleased with us.
Verse 21
O Goddess, born from the ocean of milk, residing in a lotus, worshipped by gods and demons, please reside steadfastly in my home.
Verse 22
O auspicious one among all auspicious things, residing on Vishnu's chest, I invoke you, O Goddess, be always pleased with us.
Verse 23
O Goddess, shining like a thousand suns, adorned with glittering jewels, please be seated on this lion-throne, O worshipped by gods.
Verse 24
O Goddess worshipped by gods, I offer you this pure water mixed with fragrance and flowers; please accept this Arghyam.
Verse 25
O Goddess, worshipped by all gods, please accept this fragrant and beautiful water, originating from all sacred rivers, as Paadhyam (water for feet).

O auspicious Goddess, please accept this Aachamanam (sipping water for purification) offered by me, brought in a golden pot, mixed with sandalwood and agarwood.

O Goddess residing in a lotus, please accept this Panchamrita Snanam (bath of five nectars) consisting of milk, curd, ghee, sugar, and honey.

O sister of the moon, please accept this pure water bath, which is the Ganga water brought by me, residing on Lord Mahadeva's head.

O beloved of Hari, whose feet are worshipped by gods, who loves silk garments, I offer you this pair of clothes; please accept them.

O Goddess worshipped by sages, please accept these divine armlets, bracelets, necklaces, anklets, waistbands, and other precious ornaments.

O auspicious Goddess, please accept this sacred thread (Upavita) made of molten gold, adorned with a string of pearls.

O Goddess, I offer you this fragrance mixed with camphor, agarwood, musk, and rochana; please accept it for your pleasure.
