Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
Om, O Gods, may we hear auspicious things with our ears! O Worshipful Ones, may we see auspicious things with our eyes! With firm limbs and bodies, singing your praises, may we enjoy the full lifespan allotted by the Gods for our welfare.
Verse 2
May Indra of increasing fame grant us well-being! May the all-knowing Pushan grant us well-being! May Tarkshya, the protector from harm, grant us well-being! May Brihaspati grant us well-being!
Verse 3
Om, Salutations to Ganapati! You are indeed the visible Reality. You alone are the creator. You alone are the sustainer. You alone are the destroyer. You are indeed all this Brahman. You are the manifest Atman eternally.
Verse 4
I speak the divine law. I speak the truth.
Verse 5
Protect me. Protect the speaker. Protect the listener. Protect the giver. Protect the sustainer. Protect the disciple (teacher). Protect from the West. Protect from the East. Protect from the North. Protect from the South. Protect from above. Protect from below. Protect me from all sides, protect me completely.
Verse 6
You are verily made of speech, you are full of consciousness and bliss. You are full of Brahman, you are the non-dual existence, consciousness, and bliss. You are the manifest Brahman. You are full of knowledge and wisdom.

From you, all this world is born. By you, all this world is sustained. Into you, all this world dissolves. Into you, all this world returns. You are the earth, water, fire, air, and ether. You are the four states of speech.

You are beyond the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas). You are beyond the three bodies (gross, subtle, causal). You are beyond the three times (past, present, future). You are eternally situated in the Mooladhara chakra. You are endowed with the three powers (creation, preservation, destruction). Yogis meditate upon you eternally. You are Brahma, you are Vishnu, you are Rudra, you are Indra, you are Agni, you are Vayu, you are Surya, you are Chandrama. You are the Brahman of Bhuh, Bhuvah, Svah, and Om.
Verse 9
Uttering 'Ga' first, then 'A' (the first letter of the alphabet), followed by 'm' (anusvara), adorned with a crescent moon, enhanced by 'Om' – this is your mantra form. The letter 'Ga' is the first form, 'A' is the middle form, the Anusvara (m) is the last form. The bindu (dot) is the transcendent form, the sound (nada) is the connection, and the conjunction is the combination. This is the knowledge of Ganesha. Ganaka is the Rishi. The metre is Nicriddh Gayatri. The deity is Sri Mahaganapati. Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha.
Verse 10
We know the One-tusked, we meditate on the Curved-trunk; may that Danti (tusked one) enlighten us.
Verse 11
He is one-tusked, four-armed, holding a noose and an goad. He bears his tusk and bestows boons with his hands, and has a mouse as his banner.
Verse 12
He is red-complexioned, with a large belly, elephant-ears, and wearing red garments. His body is smeared with red sandal paste, and he is beautifully worshipped with red flowers.
Verse 13
He is the compassionate Lord towards His devotees, the unchanging cause of the universe. He manifested at the beginning of creation, beyond Prakriti and Purusha.
Verse 14
One who meditates on him thus daily, that yogi is the foremost among yogis.
Verse 15
Salutations to the Lord of Hosts. Salutations to Ganapati. Salutations to the Lord of Pramathas. Salutations to you, O large-bellied one, O one-tusked one, O destroyer of obstacles, O son of Shiva, O auspicious form, salutations again and again!
Verse 16
Whoever studies this Atharvashirsha becomes worthy of becoming one with Brahman. He is not troubled by any obstacles. He prospers in all ways. He is freed from the five great sins.
Verse 17
One who recites it in the evening destroys the sins committed during the day. One who recites it in the morning destroys the sins committed during the night. One who recites it in the morning and evening becomes free from sin. He attains Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth), Kama (desires), and Moksha (liberation).
Verse 18
This Ganesha Atharvashirsha should not be given to an unworthy student. If one gives it out of delusion, he becomes a sinner. By reciting it a thousand times, one can achieve whatever desires one has.
Verse 19
By properly teaching it to eight Brahmins, one becomes as radiant as the sun. In the presence of Mahaganapati, by reciting this, one is freed from great obstacles, from great faults, from great sins, and from great dangers.
Verse 20
All is accomplished, everywhere there is happiness. Om Peace, Peace, Peace.
