Meaning & Translation

Verse 0
After cleansing the mirror of my mind with the dust of the lotus feet of the Guru, I narrate the pure glory of Lord Rama, which bestows the four fruits of life (Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha). Knowing myself to be devoid of intelligence, I remember Lord Hanuman. Grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove all my afflictions and impurities.
Verse 1
When in childhood, you swallowed the sun, all three worlds were plunged into darkness. The world was terrified by this, and no one could avert this crisis. When the gods came and pleaded, you released the sun, removing the distress. What trouble is there for a poor soul like me, O Lord, that you cannot avert? ||1||
Verse 2
You accomplished the tasks of the gods, and thus came to be known as Sankat Mochan (Remover of Troubles). The weak, the poor, the fakirs call out, and you rush to their aid, as Kabir says. The great ocean became as cool as ice, like a lotus in water, by your power. What trouble is there for a poor soul like me, O Lord, that you cannot avert? ||2||
Verse 3
Ghosts and evil spirits dare not come near when Mahavir's name is recited. Chanting with devotion, all sorrows flee, and auspiciousness emanates from the mouth. Performing good deeds with disciplined effort, one does not get entangled in illusion or attachment. What trouble is there for a poor soul like me, O Lord, that you cannot avert? ||3||
Verse 4
When Lakshman fainted, Ahiravan took him to Patal Lok (underworld). No one among the gods could then perceive him; he was seized by the Lord of Death. Instantly, you brought him back, and then joy arose, and all sorrows fled. What trouble is there for a poor soul like me, O Lord, that you cannot avert? ||4||
Verse 5
When arrows were released by your arms, Lord Ramchandra's Lakshman's swoon was cured (by Sanjeevani brought by Hanuman). No one among the gods could perceive the truth then; he was seized by the Lord of Death. Instantly, you brought him back, and then joy arose, and all sorrows fled. What trouble is there for a poor soul like me, O Lord, that you cannot avert? ||5||
Verse 6
O Son of the Wind (Hanuman), you fulfilled your resolve when Ravan's court was powerful. You entered the enemy's city of Lanka to accomplish all of Lord Ramchandra's tasks. Then you set Lanka ablaze without delay, joy arose, and all sorrows fled. What trouble is there for a poor soul like me, O Lord, that you cannot avert? ||6||
Verse 7
Ghosts and evil spirits dare not come near when Mahavir's name is recited. Chanting with devotion, all sorrows flee, and auspiciousness emanates from the mouth. Performing good deeds with disciplined effort, one does not get entangled in illusion or attachment. What trouble is there for a poor soul like me, O Lord, that you cannot avert? ||7||
Verse 8
Bali, Sugriva, Vibhishan, Jambavan, Angad – you always protected them, O Hanuman. Through your grace alone, many crises have been averted multiple times. Tulsidas says with folded hands, 'Now remove my troubles.' What trouble is there for a poor soul like me, O Lord, that you cannot avert? ||8||
