ଯକ୍ଷସ୍ୱରୂପାୟ ଜଟାଧରାୟ ପିନାକହସ୍ତାୟ ସନାତନାୟ । ଦିବ୍ୟାୟ ଦେବାୟ ଦିଗମ୍ବରାୟ ତସ୍ମୈ "ୟ" କାରାୟ ନମଃ ଶିବାୟ ॥

ପଞ୍ଚାକ୍ଷରମିଦଂ ପୁଣ୍ୟଂ ଯଃ ପଠେଚ୍ଛିବସନ୍ନିଧୌ । ଶିବଲୋକମବାପ୍ନୋତି ଶିବେନ ସହ ମୋଦତେ ॥

Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
Salutations to Shiva, who wears the king of snakes as a garland, who has three eyes, whose body is smeared with sacred ashes, who is the great Lord (Maheshwara). He is eternal, pure, and clad in directions (Nirguna, disrobed). Salutations to that 'Na' syllable, which represents Shiva.
Verse 2
Salutations to Shiva, whose body is adorned with water from the Mandakini river and sandalwood paste, who is the Lord of Nandi and the chief of the Ganas (Pramathanatha), the Great Lord. He is worshipped with Mandara flowers and many other flowers. Salutations to that 'Ma' syllable, which represents Shiva.
Verse 3
Salutations to Shiva, who is auspicious, who is like the sun to the lotus-like face of Gauri (Parvati), who destroyed the sacrifice of Daksha. He has a blue throat (Nilakantha) and has the bull as his emblem. Salutations to that 'Shi' syllable, which represents Shiva.
Verse 4
Salutations to Shiva, who is worshipped by the great sages like Vasishtha, Agastya (Kumbhodbhava), Gautama, and other revered sages and gods, who is the supreme one. He has the moon, sun, and fire as his three eyes. Salutations to that 'Va' syllable, which represents Shiva.
Verse 5
Salutations to Shiva, who takes the form of a Yaksha (celestial being), who has matted locks, who holds the Pinaka bow in his hand, who is eternal. He is divine, the supreme deity, and clad in directions. Salutations to that 'Ya' syllable, which represents Shiva.
Verse 6
This sacred five-syllable mantra (Panchakshari) bestows merit. Whoever recites it in the presence of Shiva attains the abode of Shiva and rejoices with Shiva.
