एक समय की बात है, एक नगर में एक वृद्ध और गरीब ब्राह्मणी रहती थी। वह भगवान गणेश की बहुत बड़ी भक्त थी। वह हर महीने की कृष्णपक्ष की चतुर्थी को गणेश जी का व्रत रखती थी और पूरे विधि-विधान से पूजा करती थी। उसकी श्रद्धा और भक्ति देखकर भगवान गणेश प्रसन्न हुए।

एक दिन भगवान गणेश स्वयं एक वृद्ध ब्राह्मण के वेश में उसके घर आए और बोले, "हे ब्राह्मणी! मैं तेरी सेवा से बहुत प्रसन्न हूँ। तू मुझसे कोई वरदान माँग।" ब्राह्मणी ने कहा, "प्रभु! यदि आप मुझ पर प्रसन्न हैं, तो मुझे धन-धान्य और मेरे पुत्रों को सुख-समृद्धि प्रदान करें।"

भगवान गणेश ने कहा, "तुम माघ मास की कृष्णपक्ष की चतुर्थी को संकष्टी गणेश चतुर्थी का व्रत करो। इस दिन विधिपूर्वक गणेश जी की पूजा करो और दूर्वा, मोदक, लड्डू तथा फल अर्पित करो। रात को चंद्रमा को अर्घ्य दो और व्रत का पारण करो। इस व्रत के प्रभाव से तुम्हारी सभी इच्छाएँ पूर्ण होंगी और घर में सुख-समृद्धि आएगी।"

ब्राह्मणी ने भगवान गणेश के बताए अनुसार व्रत किया। उसने पूरी श्रद्धा और निष्ठा से पूजा की। व्रत के प्रभाव से कुछ ही समय में उसका घर धन-धान्य से भर गया। उसके पुत्रों को भी व्यापार में खूब लाभ हुआ और वे सुखी जीवन जीने लगे।

ब्राह्मणी के पुत्रों को अपनी समृद्धि पर अहंकार हो गया। वे गणेश जी की पूजा-अर्चना को महत्व नहीं देते थे। जब उनकी माता गणेश चतुर्थी का व्रत रखती थीं, तो वे उनका उपहास करते थे और उन्हें पूजा करने से रोकते थे।

भगवान गणेश अपने भक्त के अपमान से क्रोधित हुए। उन्होंने ब्राह्मणी के पुत्रों को उनके अहंकार का दंड देने का निश्चय किया। जल्द ही उनके व्यापार में घाटा होने लगा और वे धीरे-धीरे अपनी सारी संपत्ति गंवा बैठे। उनके घर में दरिद्रता फिर से आ गई।

जब ब्राह्मणी ने अपने पुत्रों की दुर्दशा देखी, तो वह बहुत दुखी हुई। उसने भगवान गणेश से प्रार्थना की और उनसे अपने पुत्रों को क्षमा करने का निवेदन किया। उसने गणेश जी से पूछा कि उनके पुत्रों से क्या अपराध हुआ है।

भगवान गणेश ने उसे बताया कि उसके पुत्रों ने उनकी पूजा का अपमान किया है और इसी कारण उन्हें यह कष्ट भोगना पड़ रहा है। ब्राह्मणी ने अपने पुत्रों को समझाया और उन्हें अपनी गलती का पश्चाताप करने और गणेश जी का व्रत रखने के लिए प्रेरित किया। पुत्रों ने अपनी माँ की बात मानी और पूरी श्रद्धा से गणेश चतुर्थी का व्रत रखा।

गणेश जी अपने भक्तों पर शीघ्र प्रसन्न होते हैं। पुत्रों की सच्ची श्रद्धा और पश्चाताप देखकर भगवान गणेश ने उन्हें क्षमा कर दिया और उनके जीवन में फिर से सुख-समृद्धि लौटा दी। उनके व्यापार में फिर से बरकत होने लगी और घर में खुशहाली छा गई।

Verse 1
Once upon a time, there lived an old and poor Brahmin woman in a city. She was a great devotee of Lord Ganesha. Every month, on the Chaturthi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight), she observed a fast for Lord Ganesha and worshipped him with complete rituals. Seeing her faith and devotion, Lord Ganesha was pleased.
Verse 2
One day, Lord Ganesha himself came to her house in the guise of an old Brahmin and said, "O Brahmin woman! I am very pleased with your service. Ask me for a boon." The Brahmin woman said, "Lord! If you are pleased with me, then grant me wealth and prosperity, and happiness and prosperity to my sons."
Verse 3
Lord Ganesha said, "You should observe the Sankashti Ganesh Chaturthi fast on the Chaturthi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Magha. On this day, worship Lord Ganesha with proper rituals and offer durva grass, modak, ladoo, and fruits. At night, offer Arghya to the moon and break your fast. By the effect of this fast, all your wishes will be fulfilled, and happiness and prosperity will come to your home."
Verse 4
The Brahmin woman observed the fast as instructed by Lord Ganesha. She worshipped with complete faith and devotion. Due to the effect of the fast, in a short time, her house was filled with wealth and grain. Her sons also gained much profit in business and started living a happy life.
Verse 5
The Brahmin woman's sons became arrogant due to their prosperity. They did not give importance to the worship of Lord Ganesha. When their mother observed the Ganesh Chaturthi fast, they would ridicule her and prevent her from worshipping.
Verse 6
Lord Ganesha became angry at the insult of his devotee. He decided to punish the Brahmin woman's sons for their arrogance. Soon, their businesses started incurring losses, and they gradually lost all their wealth. Poverty returned to their home.
Verse 7
When the Brahmin woman saw the plight of her sons, she became very sad. She prayed to Lord Ganesha and pleaded with him to forgive her sons. She asked Lord Ganesha what offense her sons had committed.
Verse 8
Lord Ganesha told her that her sons had insulted his worship, and for this reason, they were suffering. The Brahmin woman explained to her sons and encouraged them to repent for their mistakes and observe Lord Ganesha's fast. The sons listened to their mother and observed the Ganesh Chaturthi fast with full devotion.
Verse 9
Lord Ganesha is quickly pleased with his devotees. Seeing the true devotion and repentance of the sons, Lord Ganesha forgave them and restored happiness and prosperity to their lives. Their businesses started flourishing again, and joy spread throughout their home.
Verse 10
Thus, whoever observes the Ganesh Chaturthi fast with complete faith and devotion, all their troubles are removed, and by the grace of Lord Ganesha, they attain happiness, peace, prosperity, and desired results.
