In ancient times, there was a city, whose name was Shivapur.

In that city, a poor Brahmin lived, his name was Dharmadatta.

Dharmadatta was extremely sorrowful, poverty surrounded him.

One day he met a great sage, and narrated his sorrows.

The sage said, 'Oh Brahmin, you should observe the Shiva Vrat.'
