ஒரு காலத்தில், ஒரு கிராமத்தில் சுதாமா என்ற ஏழை பிராமணர் வாழ்ந்து வந்தார். அவர் மிகவும் பக்தியுள்ளவர், ஆனால் அவரது குடும்பம் வறுமையில் வாடியது. பசியால் வாடும் தன் மனைவி மக்களையும், தன் நிலையையும் கண்டு மனம் கலங்கினார்.

ஒரு நாள், ஒரு ஞானி அந்த வழியாகச் சென்றார். சுதாமாவின் நிலையைப் பார்த்த ஞானி, அவரிடம் கருணை கொண்டு, அவரது கஷ்டங்களுக்கான தீர்வைக் கூறினார்.

பகவான் விஷ்ணு கூறினார், "சுதாமரே, உன் பக்தி என்னை மெய்சிலிர்க்க வைத்தது. உன் வறுமை நீங்கி, உன் குடும்பம் சகல செல்வங்களோடும் வாழும். நீ கேட்ட வரங்களை அளிப்பேன்."

சுதாமா ஆனந்தக் கண்ணீர் வடித்தார். அவர் பகவான் விஷ்ணுவிடம், "பகவானே, எனக்கு எந்த செல்வமும் தேவையில்லை. என் இறுதி மூச்சு வரை உன் பாத கமலங்களில் பக்தி மட்டுமே வேண்டும்" என்று கூறினார்.

பகவான் விஷ்ணு புன்சிரிப்புடன், "உன் தூய பக்திக்கு நான் தலை வணங்குகிறேன். நீ கேட்டது போலவே, வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் எனது பக்தி உன்னிடம் நிலைத்திருக்கும். மேலும், உனது குடும்பம் எப்போதும் வறுமையின்றி, எல்லா நலன்களோடும் வாழும்" என்று அருளினார்.

பகவான் விஷ்ணு மறைந்ததும், சுதாமாவின் வீடும் அவரது குடும்பமும் பெரும் செல்வத்தையும் செழிப்பையும் அடைந்தன. ஆனால் சுதாமா தன் பக்தியை ஒருபோதும் கைவிடவில்லை.

Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
Om Salutations to Lord Maha Vishnu! Today, let us learn about the Vishnu Vrat Katha. Observing this fast bestows the grace of Lord Maha Vishnu and grants all kinds of prosperity.
Verse 2
Once upon a time, in a village, lived a poor Brahmin named Sudama. He was very devoted, but his family suffered in poverty. Seeing his wife and children tormented by hunger, and his own plight, he was deeply saddened.
Verse 3
One day, a sage passed that way. Seeing Sudama's condition, the compassionate sage told him the solution to his troubles.
Verse 4
The sage said, "Oh Sudama, if you observe the Vishnu Vrat every Thursday or on Ekadashi, your poverty will vanish, and you will attain all wealth. Lord Vishnu is compassionate; he never abandons his devotees."
Verse 5
Sudama rejoiced upon hearing the sage's advice. From that day onwards, he began observing the Vishnu Vrat with complete faith and devotion. He would wake up in the morning, bathe, and worship Lord Vishnu with Tulsi, flowers, and offerings.
Verse 6
He recited Vishnu Sahasranama and other Vishnu stotrams daily. His devotion grew day by day, and his mind attained peace and confidence.
Verse 7
After a few months, Sudama's fast and devotion pleased Lord Vishnu. One day, Lord Vishnu came to Sudama's house in the guise of an ascetic.
Verse 8
Sudama welcomed the ascetic with love and offered him a seat. The ascetic, intending to test Sudama's devotion, asked him, "Oh devotee, why are you suffering in this poverty? Are your fasts not bearing fruit?"
Verse 9
Sudama smiled and replied, "Swami, my poverty is due to my past karmas. By the grace of Lord Vishnu, I firmly believe that all these will vanish one day. My devotion will never diminish."
Verse 10
Seeing Sudama's unwavering devotion, the ascetic was pleased. He transformed into his true form, Lord Vishnu, and appeared before Sudama.
Verse 11
Lord Vishnu said, "Oh Sudama, your devotion has moved me deeply. Your poverty will vanish, and your family will live with all riches. I grant you whatever boons you ask for."
Verse 12
Sudama shed tears of joy. He told Lord Vishnu, "Oh Lord, I do not need any wealth. All I desire is devotion at your lotus feet until my last breath."
Verse 13
Lord Vishnu smiled and blessed him, saying, "I bow to your pure devotion. As you have wished, my devotion will remain with you throughout your life. Moreover, your family will always live without poverty and with all well-being."
Verse 14
As Lord Vishnu disappeared, Sudama's house and his family attained great wealth and prosperity. But Sudama never abandoned his devotion.
Verse 15
Whoever listens to or reads this Vishnu Vrat Katha will receive the complete grace of Lord Vishnu. Their poverty will vanish, wealth will increase, and they will attain a peaceful life.
