సూతుడు ఇలా చెప్పాడు: ఒకానొకప్పుడు దేవతలు బ్రహ్మదేవుని వద్దకు వెళ్ళి, తమ కష్టాలను నివారించి, శాంతిని, శ్రేయస్సును ప్రసాదించే వ్రతం ఏదైనా ఉంటే చెప్పమని ప్రార్థించారు. అప్పుడు బ్రహ్మదేవుడు, 'విష్ణు వ్రతం' అన్ని కష్టాలను తొలగించి, సర్వశుభాలను ప్రసాదిస్తుందని చెప్పాడు.

Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
In ancient times, in the Naimisharanya forest, sages led by Shaunaka approached Suta Maharshi and asked, 'What is the easiest way for humans in the Kali Yuga to cleanse their sins and attain salvation?' Suta then began to explain the greatness of Lord Mahavishnu's Vrat.
Verse 2
Suta narrated thus: Once, the gods approached Lord Brahma and pleaded with him to reveal a Vrat that could alleviate their suffering and bestow peace and prosperity. Lord Brahma then declared that the 'Vishnu Vrat' removes all troubles and grants all auspiciousness.
Verse 3
Those who observe this Vrat attain wealth, progeny, victory, health, and ultimately liberation. Even listening to, reciting, or narrating this Vrat Katha with devotion grants the blessings of Lord Mahavishnu.
Verse 4
On the day of observing the Vrat, one should wake up early, take a bath, and remain pure. Cleanse the puja room, light a lamp, and consecrate an idol or picture of Sri Mahavishnu. Prepare the necessary flowers, fruits, and offerings for the puja.
Verse 5
Chant the mantra 'Om Namo Narayanaya' and recite the Vishnu Sahasranamam. Worship with incense, lamps, and offerings, and then read or listen to the Vrat Katha. After the puja, partake of the prasad and meditate on the Lord.
Verse 6
Continuing the story, a poor Brahmin lived with his wife in great poverty. They barely had proper food to eat. One day, as the Brahmin was cutting wood in the forest, he met a sage. He narrated his hardships to the sage.
Verse 7
With a compassionate heart, the sage explained the glory of Vishnu Vrat to the Brahmin and instructed him on how to observe it. The Brahmin, delighted, returned home and explained the sage's words to his wife. Both husband and wife resolved to observe the Vishnu Vrat with devotion.
Verse 8
On the ensuing Ekadashi, they observed the Vishnu Vrat exactly as instructed by the sage. They fasted, meditated on Vishnu, and kept vigil through the night. Lord Mahavishnu, pleased with their devotion and sincerity, appeared before them.
Verse 9
Vishnu blessed them, saying their home would be filled with gold. The next morning, the Brahmin and his wife were astonished to find immense wealth and gold in their house. Their poverty was gone, and they lived happily thereafter.
Verse 10
Thus, Lord Mahavishnu bestows all auspiciousness upon those who observe the Vishnu Vrat with faith and devotion. Those who read or listen to this story also attain the eight forms of wealth and good health.
