Meaning & Translation
Verse 0
Cleaning the mirror of my mind with the dust of my Guru's lotus feet, I narrate the pure glory of Lord Rama, which bestows the four fruits of life (Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha). Knowing myself to be devoid of intelligence, I meditate on Hanuman, the son of Vayu. Grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove all my afflictions and impurities.
Verse 1
Hail Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtues. Hail the lord of monkeys, who enlightens the three worlds.
Verse 2
You are the messenger of Rama, possessing immeasurable strength. You are known as Anjani's son and the son of Vayu (wind god).
Verse 3
Great hero, valiant one, with a body like Vajra (diamond/thunderbolt). You dispel evil thoughts and are a companion to those with good sense.
Verse 4
Your body is of golden hue, beautifully adorned. You wear earrings in your ears, and your hair is curly.
Verse 5
In your hands shine the mace (Vajra) and the flag. A sacred thread (janeu) made of 'moonj' grass adorns your shoulder.
Verse 6
You are an incarnation of Shiva, son of Kesari. Your valor and glory are revered by the entire world.
Verse 7
You are learned, virtuous, and extremely clever. You are always eager to do Lord Rama's work.
Verse 8
You delight in hearing the glories of the Lord. Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita reside in your heart.
Verse 9
Assuming a tiny form, you appeared before Sita. Taking a colossal form, you burnt Lanka.
Verse 10
Assuming a terrible form, you destroyed the demons. Thus, you accomplished Lord Ramachandra's tasks.
Verse 11
You brought the Sanjeevani herb and revived Lakshmana. Lord Rama embraced you joyfully.
Verse 12
Lord Rama praised you greatly, saying, 'You are as dear to me as my brother Bharat.'
Verse 13
Thousands of mouths sing your glory. Saying this, Lord Rama embraced you.
Verse 14
Sages like Sanaka, Brahma and other great sages, Narada, Saraswati, along with the king of serpents (Sheshnaga).
Verse 15
Even Yama (god of death), Kubera (god of wealth), and the protectors of the eight directions cannot describe your glory. How can any poet or scholar do so?
Verse 16
You rendered a great service to Sugriva. You united him with Rama and helped him regain his kingdom.
Verse 17
Vibhishana followed your advice. Thus, he became the king of Lanka, as the whole world knows.
Verse 18
The sun, which is thousands of Yojanas away, you swallowed it, mistaking it for a sweet fruit.
Verse 19
Putting Lord Rama's ring in your mouth, you crossed the ocean. There is no wonder in this.
Verse 20
All the difficult tasks in the world become easy through your grace.
Verse 21
You are the gatekeeper at Rama's door. No one can enter without your permission.
Verse 22
All joys are found in your refuge. When you are the protector, there is no fear.
Verse 23
Only you can control your mighty splendor. The three worlds tremble at your roar.
Verse 24
Ghosts and evil spirits dare not come near, when the name of the great hero (Hanuman) is uttered.
Verse 25
All diseases vanish and all pains disappear by continuously chanting the name of brave Hanuman.
Verse 26
Hanuman delivers from all difficulties, those who meditate on him with mind, deed, and word.
Verse 27
Lord Rama is the ascetic king over all. You accomplished all his tasks.
Verse 28
And whoever comes with any desire, receives the boundless fruit of life.
Verse 29
Your glory extends through all four ages. Your fame is renowned throughout the world.
Verse 30
You are the protector of saints and holy men. Destroyer of demons, you are dear to Rama.
Verse 31
You are the bestower of eight siddhis (supernatural powers) and nine nidhis (treasures). Mother Janaki (Sita) granted you this boon.
Verse 32
You possess the elixir of Rama's name. You always remain Lord Rama's servant.
Verse 33
By chanting your name, one reaches Rama. And is relieved from the sorrows of many births.
Verse 34
At the time of death, one goes to Rama's abode. And is born as a devotee of Hari (God).
Verse 35
One need not invoke any other deity. By serving Hanuman, all happiness is attained.
Verse 36
All troubles cease and all pains disappear for those who remember the mighty and brave Hanuman.
Verse 37
Hail, hail, hail, Lord Hanuman! Bestow your grace upon me like a divine being.
Verse 38
Whoever recites this a hundred times, is freed from bondage and attains great joy.
Verse 39
Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa, attains spiritual perfection; Lord Shiva himself is the witness.
Verse 40
Tulsidas is always a devotee of Hari. O Lord, make my heart your abode.
Verse 41
O son of Vayu, destroyer of troubles, embodiment of auspiciousness. Reside in my heart, O King of Gods, along with Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita.
