Meaning & Translation

Verse 0
Having cleansed the mirror of my mind with the dust from the lotus feet of Sri Guru, I now narrate the pure glory of Lord Rama, which bestows the four fruits of life (Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha). Knowing myself to be devoid of intelligence, I meditate on Hanuman, the son of Vayu. Grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove all my afflictions and impurities.
Verse 1
Victory to Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtues! Victory to the lord of monkeys, who illuminates the three worlds!
Verse 2
You are the messenger of Rama, the abode of immeasurable strength. You are Anjani's son, known as the son of the Wind God.
Verse 3
Great hero, valiant one, with a body like Vajra (thunderbolt)! You dispel evil thoughts and are the companion of good sense.
Verse 4
Of golden complexion, adorned in a beautiful attire. With earrings in your ears and curly hair.
Verse 5
In your hands shine the mace (Vajra) and banner. A sacred thread of Munja grass adorns your shoulder.
Verse 6
An incarnation of Shiva, the joy of Kesari! Your splendor and valor are revered throughout the world.
Verse 7
You are learned, virtuous, and extremely clever. You are always eager to accomplish Lord Rama's tasks.
Verse 8
You delight in listening to the Lord's deeds. Rama, Lakshman, and Sita dwell in your heart.
Verse 9
Assuming a tiny form, you appeared before Sita. Taking a colossal form, you burned Lanka.
Verse 10
Assuming a terrifying form, you slayed the demons. You accomplished all of Lord Ramachandra's missions.
Verse 11
You brought the Sanjeevani herb and revived Lakshmana. Lord Rama embraced you joyfully.
Verse 12
Lord Rama praised you greatly, saying, 'You are as dear to me as my brother Bharat.'
Verse 13
The thousand-headed Sheshnag sings your glory. Saying this, Lord Rama embraced you.
Verse 14
Sanaka and other sages, Brahma and other gods, Narada, Goddess Saraswati, and Sheshnag (king of serpents).
Verse 15
Yama, Kubera, and the guardians of directions, where can poets and scholars describe your glory?
Verse 16
You did a great favor to Sugriva. You united him with Rama and got him his kingdom.
Verse 17
Vibhishana accepted your counsel. He became the King of Lanka, as the whole world knows.
Verse 18
The sun, situated thousands of Yojanas away, you swallowed it, thinking it a sweet fruit.
Verse 19
Carrying Lord Rama's ring in your mouth, you leaped across the ocean; there is no wonder in this.
Verse 20
All the difficult tasks in the world become easy by your grace.
Verse 21
You are the guardian at Rama's door. No one can enter without your permission.
Verse 22
All happiness is found in your refuge. With you as the protector, why should one fear?
Verse 23
Only you can control your own splendor. The three worlds tremble at your roar.
Verse 24
Ghosts and evil spirits dare not come near, when the name of Mahaveer is uttered.
Verse 25
All diseases perish and all pain vanishes, by continuous chanting of the brave Hanuman's name.
Verse 26
Hanuman liberates one from difficulties, who meditates on him with mind, action, and speech.
Verse 27
Lord Rama is the supreme ascetic king over all. You accomplished all his tasks.
Verse 28
Whoever comes to you with any desire, will receive the immeasurable fruits of life.
Verse 29
Your glory extends through all four yugas. Your renown illuminates the world.
Verse 30
You are the protector of saints and sages. Destroyer of demons, beloved of Rama.
Verse 31
You are the bestower of eight siddhis and nine nidhis. Mother Janaki (Sita) granted you this boon.
Verse 32
You possess the elixir of Rama's name. You always remain the servant of Lord Rama.
Verse 33
Through your devotion, one attains Rama. And forgets the sorrows of many lifetimes.
Verse 34
At the time of death, one goes to Rama's abode. Or is born as a devotee of Lord Hari.
Verse 35
One need not worship any other deity. By serving Hanuman, all happiness is attained.
Verse 36
All troubles cease and all pain is removed, for one who remembers the mighty Hanuman.
Verse 37
Victory, victory, victory to Lord Hanuman! Bestow your grace upon us, like a divine guru.

One who recites this a hundred times, is freed from bondage and attains great joy.
Verse 39
Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa, attains spiritual perfection, with Lord Shiva as witness.
Verse 40
Tulsidas is always a servant of the Lord. O Lord, make my heart your dwelling place.

O son of Vayu, destroyer of sorrow, embodiment of auspiciousness! Dwell in my heart, O King of Gods, along with Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita.
