Meaning & Translation
Verse 1
Having polished the mirror of my heart with the dust of my Guru's lotus feet, I narrate the pure glory of Lord Rama, who bestows the four fruits of life (Dharma, Artha, Kama, Moksha).
Verse 2
Knowing my body to be devoid of intelligence, I meditate on Pavan Kumar (son of the wind-god). Grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove my afflictions and impurities.
Verse 3
Victory to Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtues. Victory to the Lord of Monkeys, who illuminates the three worlds.
Verse 4
You are Rama's messenger, the abode of immeasurable strength. You are known as Anjani's son and the son of the Wind God.
Verse 5
Great hero, mighty and valorous, with a body like Vajra (thunderbolt). You are the dispeller of evil thoughts and companion of good sense.
Verse 6
You possess a golden hue and a beautiful attire. You wear earrings and have curly hair.
Verse 7
In your hands shine the mace (Vajra) and the banner. A sacred thread (Janeoo) made of Munja grass adorns your shoulder.
Verse 8
You are an incarnation of Lord Shiva, son of Kesari. Your valor and glory are revered by the whole world.
Verse 9
You are learned, virtuous, and extremely clever. You are always eager to accomplish Lord Rama's tasks.
Verse 10
You are devoted to listening to the tales of Lord Rama. Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita reside in your heart.
Verse 11
You assumed a tiny form to appear before Sita. And by taking a formidable form, you burnt Lanka.
Verse 12
Assuming a colossal form, you annihilated the demons. Thus, you accomplished the tasks of Lord Rama.
Verse 13
You brought the Sanjeevani herb and revived Lakshmana. Lord Rama embraced you joyfully.
Verse 14
Lord Rama praised you highly, saying, 'You are as dear to me as my brother Bharat.'
Verse 15
'Let the thousand-mouthed Sheshnag sing your glories,' saying this, Lord Rama embraced you.
Verse 16
Sages like Sanaka, Brahma, and other great ascetics, Narada, Saraswati, along with the king of serpents (Sheshnag).
Verse 17
Even Yama (god of death), Kubera (god of wealth), and the guardians of directions cannot fully describe your glory, how can any poet or scholar do so?
Verse 18
You rendered great service to Sugriva. By uniting him with Rama, you helped him regain his kingdom.
Verse 19
Vibhishana heeded your advice. He became the king of Lanka, as the whole world knows.
Verse 20
The sun, which is thousands of miles away, you swallowed, mistaking it for a sweet fruit.
Verse 21
Carrying Lord Rama's ring in your mouth, you crossed the ocean – there is no wonder in this.
Verse 22
All the difficult tasks in the world become easy through your grace.
Verse 23
You are the guardian at Rama's door. No one can enter without your permission.
Verse 24
All joys are found in your refuge. When you are the protector, what fear can there be?
Verse 25
Only you can control your mighty splendor. The three worlds tremble at your roar.
Verse 26
Ghosts and evil spirits dare not come near when the name of Mahaveer is chanted.
Verse 27
All diseases are cured, and all pain vanishes by continuous chanting of the name of brave Hanuman.
Verse 28
Hanuman rescues from all troubles those who meditate on him with mind, deed, and word.
Verse 29
Lord Rama is the ascetic King over all. You accomplished all his tasks.
Verse 30
Whoever brings any other desire to you, that person attains the boundless fruit of life.
Verse 31
Your glory extends through all four ages. Your fame illuminates the entire world.
Verse 32
You are the protector of saints and sages. You are the destroyer of demons, and beloved of Rama.
Verse 33
You are the bestower of eight Siddhis (powers) and nine Nidhis (treasures). Mother Janaki (Sita) granted you this boon.
Verse 34
You possess the elixir of Rama's name. You always remain the servant of Lord Rama.
Verse 35
By chanting your name, one attains Lord Rama. And forgets the sorrows of many births.
Verse 36
At the time of death, one goes to Lord Rama's abode. Or is born as a devotee of God.
Verse 37
One need not contemplate any other deity. By serving Hanuman, all joys are attained.
Verse 38
All troubles vanish and all pain ceases for those who remember the mighty Hanuman.
Verse 39
Hail, Hail, Hail, Lord Hanuman! Bestow your grace upon me, just like a divine Guru.
Verse 40
Whoever recites this (Chalisa) a hundred times. Is freed from bondage and attains great joy.
Verse 41
Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa, attains success, Lord Shiva himself is the witness.

Tulsidas is always a devotee of Lord Rama. O Lord, please reside in my heart.
