Verse 125
In a mind entangled by desires, clouded by ignorance, and in dark times, how can a being like me attain the supreme divine light? O Goddess, the abundant words, which are the very form of Hari (Vishnu) and worthy of praise, spontaneously emerge from my mouth.
Verse 126
Brahma, Vishnu, Varuna, Kubera, Indra, the lord of life (Yama), Chandra, Aditya, and the Vasus – these are deities of different classes. I believe that even Saraswati (Bharati) does not fully comprehend your true form; she only touches upon your gross aspect, and how much less can one like me?
Verse 127
If the praise of Sthāṇu (Shiva) is overwhelming, and devotion is directed upwards, then a person, whether a villager or a forest dweller, becomes a praiser. But if there is no devotion in you, or if one studies Brahma-vidya (knowledge of Brahman), such a deluded being, ignorant of his own actions, is not worthy of your contemplation.
Verse 128
The universe manifests and attains you as its substratum. There is no creation here if there is no conscious creator. The existence of earth and other elements is due to your inherent power. Thus, the Lord's sovereignty over all worlds is established.
Verse 129
The sages declare Prakriti (nature) to be enjoyable but devoid of consciousness. The enjoyer, being endowed with intellect, is capable of transforming it. Enjoyment in this union (of Prakriti and Purusha) becomes abundant, and the reason for this is: O Nilagriva (Shiva), you are the architect of the world's establishment.
Verse 130
The world exists in various states due to numerous distinctions of space and time. He who removes sins from the mountains (or from all directions) through two flawless processes, observing and creating everything in it according to rules – that is the omniscience of the creator of the three worlds, where there is no (hidden) thread.
Verse 131
When Rajas (passion) is abundant, leading to the excellent birth and existence of beings in the world, and again, when Tamas (ignorance) is plentiful, bringing about dissolution. This profound nature, from Brahma down to a blade of grass, becomes a plaything.
Verse 132
Though those with shallow hearts speak of Your attire as a strange hide, Your abode as the cremation ground, and Your vehicle as a certain bull, O Lord, the word 'Īśa' (Lord) resonates in each of these, nourishing their true meaning.
Verse 133
Is this attire made of inauspicious things like bones? Who would be this Bhavani, bowed down by the weight of His pot-like breasts? What are these arrows, sword, axe, and rosary? O Hara, one who sees this becomes an object of ridicule, known only through laughter.
Verse 134
Even the great and extremely fierce Kapala Vrata (vow of carrying a skull) that was asked about, did it not become pure and sacred, the path to liberation? The Yogamaya, who resides in Dakshayani with great affection, she indeed takes on the form of a couple, the root cause of the growth of beings.
Verse 135
O Blue-throated One, if any mortal, whose body is emaciated by rituals, is looked upon by You with a loving gaze, he becomes one whose neck is embraced by celestial women. Even if he has ascended to the well-guarded abode of Indra, if You are angered, he falls unsupported into a net of darkness.
Verse 136
Your eternal youth, born in the thicket of reeds, with six faces and twelve eyes, whose radiance is as bright as golden lotus petals, by that, the celestial maidens, along with Indra and his retinue, forget the imprisonment of the demon kings who conquered the Asuras.
Verse 137
O Hara, the water of the Bhagirathi (Ganga), which swiftly draws planets, sun, and moon from the horizons, humbling the pride of the breaking waves of the deluge, immediately became like pearls, touching Your matted locks, and adorned with beautiful flowers on Your crest.
Verse 138
The dark blue hue on Your neck, shining like a broken emerald, does not merely explain the universal manifestation of Your grace. For if the poison born from the slow churning of the ocean's depths had not been thus contained, neither the animate nor the inanimate world would exist.
Verse 139
Having aimed the arrow named Sammohana, which maddens with its power, on his bow, Kama (Panchabana) stood for a moment beside Girisha (Shiva). From above, in the fiery circle produced by Shiva's angry gaze, he appeared like a cluster of red Ashoka flowers with bees buzzing around the edges of smoke.
Verse 140
The Lord of Lanka (Ravana), who shook Your abode Kailasa with his arms, long as the huge waves of the salty ocean, was brought down to Patala by the mere pressure of Your thumb, with his faces screaming, vomiting blood, and eyes filled with tears.
Verse 141
Even Your sovereignty, which shines without debt, with only one head remaining, and the lotus-like heads of the ten-faced one offered at Your feet – by this alone, he (Ravana) attained his desired fruit, becoming subservient to the glory of the Rakshasas, and the sole enemy of the Lokapalas in the assemblies of gods and asuras.
Verse 142
O Moon-adorned One, devotion led even Banasura, who touched Your lotus feet out of fear, to a place at the head of the world. For no one among the lords of gods and demons was able to behold his face, which was terrifying with fiery fangs from his frowning eyes.
Verse 143
At the placement of Your feet, the earth, resting on the shoulders of the serpent, bows down. By the movement of Your arms, the multitude of clouds, along with the planetary constellations, whirls. The directions are momentarily destroyed by Your mighty roar. The universe assumes a different state when You begin Your cosmic dance.
Verse 144
When You stood as a pillar of fire, neither Brahma (born from lotus) could find Your top, nor Vishnu (holder of Sharanga bow) Your bottom. Then, as they both praised You from above with slight wonder, Your form, with a dark throat and tawny eyes, manifested.
Verse 145
After Your victory over Tripura, as You stood with Your arm raised, placing a praiseworthy gaze on the daughter of the mountain (Parvati) at the tip of Your bow, sweet-smelling, moist showers of Mandara flowers fell, followed by the long hum of bees from the celestial gardens.
Verse 146
Having plucked out his own red eye, which had a lustrous pupil, as the first offering among a thousand difficult yet supremely attainable acts, Vishnu obtained the fiery, matted discus for his right hand, which shone like the radiant orb of the rising sun.
Verse 147
When the discus came into Vishnu's hand, he, the giver of solace to the three worlds, undertook the vow of severing the heads of the Danavas. Even that eye, which was like a lotus, was offered. O Three-eyed One, what does not praiseworthy devotion offered to You yield?
Verse 148
In Your left hand, a trident with three prongs; in the other arm, a begging bowl made of a skull; the innocent moon on Your head; a serpent as a part of Your upper garment. 'What is this attire, O Three-eyed One? Where did you see it?' Thus, the daughter of the mountain (Parvati), whose soul is controlled by love, often laughs at You, O Lord.
Verse 149
Bearing a wet elephant hide, knotted at the joints, on Your shoulder, and displaying a terrifying form like a dark monsoon cloud, O Lord, seeing Gauri with her trembling hand clinging to Your shoulder out of fear, I believe You became firm and strong even in Your adamantine body out of love.
Verse 150
Those who wear serpents as ornaments, have uneven eyes, shine with the reddish glow of coral, are accompanied by their consorts, have matted hair adorned with the crescent moon, are eternally blissful, always graceful, and have smooth dark throats – such Rudra deities, holding axes, will be Your devotees.
Verse 151
Let the unskilled one delight in great efforts for the sake of results, such as practicing mantras, observing vows, undertaking pilgrimages, begging for alms in villages, or living on seeds in a hermitage in the forest. But I attain bliss at Your feet merely by remembrance.
Verse 152
Let alone bathing with streams of milk, anointing with oil, building temples, or offering fragrant flowers. Whoever merely scatters flowers, intending them for Your footrest, will never again wander into the prison-house of a mother's womb.
Verse 153
I bow to that Lord (Īśa) who is meditated upon by sages constantly in their hearts as pure white, who bears the Ganga in His matted hair, who has various forms, whose crest is adorned with the crescent moon, who wears serpents as garlands, who is accompanied by His consort, and who wears a garland of human skulls.
Verse 154
Whether in the animal kingdom, in the abode of gods, among humans, or Rakshasas, in the dwelling of Yakshas, in the city of serpents, among gods or Vidyadharas – in whatever auspicious birth, or for the sake of welfare, may my mind always be absorbed in meditating on Your lotus feet.
Verse 155
I bow to Rudra, the bestower of boons, the pure one, who carries a staff, who wears skulls, who possesses divine knowledge, who burnt Tripura, Shankara, the wielder of the trident.
Verse 156
He who is a mass of light, the guru of the three worlds, the crown jewel of holy places, the three-eyed one, residing on Kailasa, the friend of Kubera (the lord of wealth), the lord of Parvati, the Supreme Lord.
Verse 157
O Shiva, how can you, with your contradictory nature, be known? You are a Yogi and an enjoyer, one who consumes poison and holds nectar, armed with weapons and an ascetic. You are peaceful and fierce, one who has subdued desires and the companion of the mountain daughter (Parvati). You live by begging, yet are the lord of the three worlds, pure, and adorned with a garland of bones.
Verse 158
May there be devotion, which is maddeningly transformative, in that Lord of Lords, the conqueror of Tripura, who imparts the supreme, most distant, beginningless and endless knowledge of the Vedas, the highest light.
Verse 159
Thus, this beautiful, noble hymn, named Anamaya (free from disease), composed by the learned Dandi for the one adorned with the crescent moon, for the sake of protection, by chanting this, a being becomes free from disease.
Verse 160
If one properly recites this hymn, composed by the highly learned Dandi, in the Mandakranta meter, praising the Guru of the three worlds, the beloved of Parvati, one truly attains eternal merit. Therefore, O Shiva, remove the diseases of people by the recitation of this hymn.
