कुंतीपुत्र धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर कहने लगे कि हे भगवन, आषाढ़ शुक्ल देवशयनी एकादशी तथा चातुर्मास्य माहात्म्य मैंने भली प्रकार से सुना। अब कृपा करके श्रावण कृष्ण एकादशी का क्या नाम है, सो बताइए।

श्रीकृष्ण भगवान कहने लगे कि हे युधिष्ठिर! इस एकादशी की कथा एक समय स्वयं ब्रह्माजी ने देवर्षि नारद से कही थी, वही मैं तुमसे कहता हूँ। नारदजी ने ब्रह्माजी से पूछा था कि हे पितामह! श्रावण मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी की कथा सुनने की मेरी इच्छा है, उसका क्या नाम है? क्या विधि है और उसका माहात्म्य क्या है, सो कृपा करके कहिए।

नारदजी के ये वचन सुनकर ब्रह्माजी ने कहा- हे नारद! लोकों के हित के लिए तुमने बहुत सुंदर प्रश्न किया है। श्रावण मास की कृष्ण एकादशी का नाम कामिका है। उसके सुनने मात्र से वाजपेय यज्ञ का फल मिलता है। इस दिन शंख, चक्र, गदाधारी विष्णु भगवान का पूजन होता है, जिनके नाम श्रीधर, हरि, विष्णु, माधव, मधुसूदन हैं। उनकी पूजा करने से जो फल मिलता है सो सुनो।

जो फल गंगा, काशी, नैमिषारण्य और पुष्कर स्नान से मिलता है, वह विष्णु भगवान के पूजन से मिलता है। जो फल सूर्य व चंद्र ग्रहण पर कुरुक्षेत्र और काशी में स्नान करने से, समुद्र, वन सहित पृथ्वी दान करने से, सिंह राशि के बृहस्पति में गोदावरी और गंडकी नदी में स्नान से भी प्राप्त नहीं होता वह भगवान विष्णु के पूजन से मिलता है।

जो मनुष्य श्रावण में भगवान का पूजन करते हैं, उनसे देवता, गंधर्व और सूर्य आदि सब पूजित हो जाते हैं। अत: पापों से डरने वाले मनुष्यों को कामिका एकादशी का व्रत और विष्णु भगवान का पूजन अवश्यमेव करना चाहिए। पापरूपी कीचड़ में फँसे हुए और संसाररूपी समुद्र में डूबे मनुष्यों के लिए इस एकादशी का व्रत और भगवान विष्णु का पूजन अत्यंत आवश्यक है। इससे बढ़कर पापों के नाशों का कोई उपाय नहीं है।

हे नारद! स्वयं भगवान ने यही कहा है कि कामिका व्रत से जीव कुयोनि को प्राप्त नहीं होता। जो मनुष्य इस एकादशी के दिन भक्तिपूर्वक तुलसी दल भगवान विष्णु को अर्पण करते हैं, वे इस संसार के समस्त पापों से दूर रहते हैं। विष्णु भगवान रत्न, मोती, मणि तथा आभूषण आदि से इतने प्रसन्न नहीं होते जितने तुलसी दल से।

तुलसी दल पूजन का फल चार भार चाँदी और एक भार स्वर्ण के दान के बराबर होता है। हे नारद! मैं स्वयं भगवान की अतिप्रिय तुलसी को सदैव नमस्कार करता हूँ। तुलसी के पौधे को सींचने से मनुष्य की सब यातनाएँ नष्ट हो जाती हैं। दर्शन मात्र से सब पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं और स्पर्श से मनुष्य पवित्र हो जाता है।

कामिका एकादशी की रात्रि को दीपदान तथा जागरण के फल का माहात्म्य चित्रगुप्त भी नहीं कह सकते। जो इस एकादशी की रात्रि को भगवान के मंदिर में दीपक जलाते हैं उनके पितर स्वर्गलोक में अमृतपान करते हैं तथा जो घी या तेल का दीपक जलाते हैं, वे सौ करोड़ दीपकों से प्रकाशित होकर सूर्य लोक को जाते हैं।

ब्रह्माजी कहते हैं कि हे नारद! ब्रह्महत्या तथा भ्रूण हत्या आदि पापों को नष्ट करने वाली इस कामिका एकादशी का व्रत मनुष्य को यत्न के साथ करना चाहिए। कामिका एकादशी के व्रत का माहात्म्य श्रद्धा से सुनने और पढ़ने वाला मनुष्य सभी पापों से मुक्त होकर विष्णु लोक को जाता है।

कथा विधान सहित सुनाइये। नारदजी की इच्छा को सुन पितामह भीष्म ने कहा: हे नारदजी! आपने बहुत ही सुन्दर प्रस्ताव किया है। अब आप बहुत ध्यानपूर्वक इसे श्रवण कीजिए- श्रावण माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी का नाम कामिका एकादशी है। इस एकादशी की कथा सुनने मात्र से ही वाजपेय यज्ञ के फल की प्राप्ति होती है।

कामिका एकादशी के उपवास में शंख, चक्र, गदाधारी भगवान विष्णु का पूजन होता है। जो मनुष्य इस एकादशी को धूप, दीप, नैवेद्य आदि से भगवान विष्णु की पूजा करते हैं, उन्हें गंगा स्नान के फल से भी उत्तम फल की प्राप्ति होती है।

सूर्य ग्रहण और चन्द्र ग्रहण में केदार और कुरुक्षेत्र में स्नान करने से जिस पुण्य की प्राप्ति होती है, वह पुण्य कामिका एकादशी के दिन भगवान विष्णु की भक्तिपूर्वक पूजा करने से प्राप्त हो जाता है।

भगवान विष्णु की श्रावण माह में भक्तिपूर्वक पूजा करने का फल समुद्र और वन सहित पृथ्वी दान करने के फल से भी ज्यादा होता है।

व्यतिपात में गंडकी नदी में स्नान करने से जो फल प्राप्त होता है, वह फल भगवान की पूजा करने से मिल जाता है।

संसार में भगवान की पूजा का फल सबसे ज्यादा है, अतः भक्तिपूर्वक भगवान की पूजा न बन सके तो श्रावण माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की कामिका एकादशी का उपवास करना चाहिये।

आभूषणों से युक्त बछड़ा सहित गौदान करने से जो फल प्राप्त होता है, वह फल कामिका एकादशी के उपवास से मिल जाता है।

जो उत्तम द्विज श्रावण माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की कामिका एकादशी का उपवास करते हैं तथा भगवान विष्णु का पूजन करते हैं, उनसे सभी देव, नाग, किन्नर, पितृ आदि की पूजा हो जाती है, इसलिये पाप से डरने वाले व्यक्तियों को विधि-विधान सहित इस उपवास को करना चाहिये।

संसार सागर तथा पापों में फँसे हुए मनुष्यों को इनसे मुक्ति के लिये कामिका एकादशी का व्रत करना चाहिये।

कामिका एकादशी के उपवास से भी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं, संसार में इससे अधिक पापों को नष्ट करने वाला कोई और उपाय नहीं है।

हे नारदजी! स्वयं भगवान ने अपने मुख से कहा है कि मनुष्यों को अध्यात्म विद्या से जो फल प्राप्त होता है, उससे अधिक फल कामिका एकादशी का व्रत करने से मिल जाता है।

इस उपवास के करने से मनुष्य को न यमराज के दर्शन होते हैं और न ही नरक के कष्ट भोगने पड़ते हैं। वह स्वर्ग का अधिकारी बन जाता है।

जो मनुष्य इस दिन तुलसीदल से भक्तिपूर्वक भगवान विष्णु का पूजन करते हैं, वे इस संसार सागर में रहते हुए भी इस प्रकार अलग रहते हैं, जिस प्रकार कमल पुष्प जल में रहता हुआ भी जल से अलग रहता है।

तुलसीदल से भगवान श्रीहरि का पूजन करने का फल एक बार स्वर्ण और चार बार चाँदी के दान के फल के बराबर है। भगवान विष्णु रत्न, मोती, मणि आदि आभूषणों की अपेक्षा तुलसीदल से अधिक प्रसन्न होते हैं।

जो मनुष्य प्रभु का तुलसीदल से पूजन करते हैं, उनके सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं। हे नारदजी! मैं भगवान की अति प्रिय श्री तुलसीजी को प्रणाम करता हूँ।

तुलसीजी के दर्शन मात्र से मनुष्य के सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं और शरीर के स्पर्श मात्र से मनुष्य पवित्र हो जाता है। तुलसीजी को जल से स्नान कराने से मनुष्य की सभी यम यातनाएं नष्ट हो जाती हैं। जो मनुष्य तुलसीजी को भक्तिपूर्वक भगवान के श्रीचरण कमलों में अर्पित करता है, उसे मुक्ति मिलती है।

इस कामिका एकादशी की रात्रि को जो मनुष्य जागरण करते हैं और दीप-दान करते हैं, उनके पुण्यों को लिखने में चित्रगुप्त भी असमर्थ हैं। एकादशी के दिन जो मनुष्य भगवान के सामने दीपक जलाते हैं, उनके पितर स्वर्गलोक में अमृत का पान करते हैं।

भगवान के सामने जो मनुष्य घी या तिल के तेल का दीपक जलाते हैं, उनको सूर्य लोक में भी सहस्रों दीपकों का प्रकाश मिलता है।

कामिका एकादशी व्रत कथा! एक गाँव में एक वीर क्षत्रिय रहता था। एक दिन किसी कारण वश उसकी ब्राह्मण से हाथापाई हो गई और ब्राह्मण की मृत्य हो गई। अपने हाथों मरे गये ब्राह्मण की क्रिया उस क्षत्रिय ने करनी चाही। परन्तु पंडितों ने उसे क्रिया में शामिल होने से मना कर दिया। ब्राह्मणों ने बताया कि तुम पर ब्रह्म-हत्या का दोष है।

पहले प्रायश्चित कर इस पाप से मुक्त हो तब हम तुम्हारे घर भोजन करेंगे। इस पर क्षत्रिय ने पूछा कि इस पाप से मुक्त होने के क्या उपाय है। तब ब्राह्मणों ने बताया कि श्रावण माह के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी को भक्तिभाव से भगवान श्रीधर का व्रत एवं पूजन कर ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराके सदश्रिणा के साथ आशीर्वाद प्राप्त करने से इस पाप से मुक्ति मिलेगी। पंडितों के बताये हुए तरीके पर व्रत कराने वाली रात में भगवान श्रीधर ने क्षत्रिय को दर्शन देकर कहा कि तुम्हें ब्रह्म-हत्या के पाप से मुक्ति मिल गई है।

इस व्रत के करने से ब्रह्म-हत्या आदि के सभी पाप नष्ट हो जाते हैं और इहलोक में सुख भोगकर

प्राणी अन्त में विष्णुलोक को जाते हैं। इस कामिका एकादशी के माहात्म्य के श्रवण व पठन से मनुष्य स्वर्गलोक को प्राप्त करते हैं।

Sawan Ekadashi Vrat Katha 2025: सावन के महीने में दूसरे सोमवार को पड़ने वाली कामिका एकादशी का इस बार बहुत शुभ संयोग बना रही है। इस एकादशी का व्रत रखने से जातक भगवान विष्णु और शिवजी की कृपा प्राप्त होती है। पद्मपुराण के अनुसार, इस दिन व्रत कथा का पाठ करने से मोक्ष की प्राप्ति होती है और बेहद पुण्य फल मिलता है।

कामिका एकादशी व्रत कथा 2025 : युधिष्ठिर ने सवाल किया- गोविन्द। वासुदेव। आपको नमस्कार है। श्रावण के कृष्ण पक्ष में कौन-सी एकादशी आती है ? उसका वर्णन कीजिये।

भगवान कृष्ण ने कहा- राजन। सुनो, मैं तुम्हें एक पाप नाशक उपाख्यान कहकर सुनाता हूं, जिसे पूर्वकाल में ब्रह्माजी ने नारदजी के पूछने पर कहा था।

नारदजी ने प्रश्न किया- भगवन ! कमलासन ! मैं आपसे यह सुनना चाहता हूं कि श्रावण के कृष्ण पक्ष में जो एकादशी आती है, उसका क्या नाम है, उसके कौन-से देवता हैं तथा उससे कौन-सा पुण्य प्राप्त होता है? प्रभो । यह सब बताइये ।

ब्रह्माजी ने कहा- नारद ! सुनो मैं सम्पूर्ण लोकों के हित की इच्छा से तुम्हारे इस प्रश्न का उत्तर देने जा रहा हूं। श्रावण मास में जो कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी आती है, उसे 'कामिका' कहा जाता है। इसका स्मरण मात्र करने से वाजपेय यज्ञ का फल प्राप्त हो जाता है।

एकादशी के दिन मनुष्य श्रीधर, हरि, विष्णु, माधव और मधुसूदन आदि नामों से भगवान का पूजन करना बहुत फलदायी होता है। भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के पूजन से जो फल प्राप्त होता है, वह गढ़ा, काशी, नैमिषारण्य तथा पष्कर क्षेत्र में भी सिंह राशि के गुरुवार होने पर तथा व्यतीपात और दण्ड योग में गोदावरी नदी में स्नान से जिस फल की प्राप्ति होती है, वही फल भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के पूजन से भी प्राप्त होता है।

जो मनुष्य इस तिथि पर समुद्र और वन सहित समूची पृथ्वी का दान करता है और कामिका एकादशी का व्रत रखता है, वे दोनों समान फल के भागी हो जाता है।

जो कोई व्यायीपात हुई गाय को अन्यान्य सामग्रियोंसहित दान करता है, उस मनुष्य को जिस फल की प्राप्ति होती है, वही फल 'कामिका' का व्रत करने वाले को मिलता है। नरश्रेष्ठ श्रावण मास में जो भगवान श्रीधर का पूजन करता है, उसके द्वारा गन्धवौं और नांगों सहित सम्पूर्ण देवताओं की पूजा हो जाती है।

अतः पापभीरु मनुष्यों को यथाशक्ति पूरा प्रयत्न करके 'कामिका' के दिन श्रीहरि का पूजन करना अवश्य करना चाहिये। जो पाप रूपी पङ्क से भरे हुए संसार समुद्र में डूब रहे हैं, उनका उद्धार करने के लिए कामिका का व्रत सबसे उत्तम होता है।

अध्यात्म विद्या परायण पुरुषों को जिस फल की प्राप्ति होती है; उससे बहुत अधिक फल 'कामिका' व्रत करने वालों को प्राप्त होता है। 'कामिका' का व्रत करने वाला मनुष्य यदि रात्रि में जागरण करता है, तो न कभी भयंकर यमराज का दर्शन करता है और न कभी दुर्गति में ही पड़ता है।

लाल मणि, मोती, वैदूर्य और मूंगे आदि से पूजित होकर भी विष्णुजी वैसे संतुष्ट नहीं होते हैं, जिस प्रकार तुलसी दल से पूजित होने पर प्रसन्न होते हैं। यदि किसी ने तुलसी की मंजरियों से श्री केशव का पूजन कर लिया, तो उसके जन्म भर के पाप निश्चय ही नष्ट हो जाते हैं।

जो दर्शन करने पर सारे पाप समुदाय का नाश कर देती हैं, स्पर्श करने पर शरीर को पवित्र बना देती हैं, प्रणाम करने पर रोगों का निवारण कर देती हैं, जल से सींचने पर यमराज को भी भय पहुंचाती हैं, आरोपित करने पर भगवान श्रीकृष्ण के समीप लेकर जाती हैं

और भगवान के चरणों में चढ़ाने पर मोक्ष रूपी फल प्रदान कराती हैं, उस तुलसी किया देवी को हमारा नमस्कार है। जो मनुष्य कामिका एकादशी के दिन रात के समय दीपदान करता है, उसके पुण्य की संख्या चित्रगुप्त भी नहीं जानते हैं। एकादशी के दिन भगवान कृष्ण के सामने जिस भी मनुष्य का दीपक जलता है, उसके पितर स्वर्ग लोक में स्थित रहकर अमृत पान से तृप्त हो जाते हैं। घी या तिल के तेल से भगवान के सामने दीपक जलाकर मनुष्य देह त्यागने के बाद करोड़ों दीपकों से पूजित होते हुए स्वर्ग लोक में चला जाता है।

Meaning & Translation

Verse 1

Kunti's son, Dharmaraj Yudhishthira, said, 'O Lord, I have heard well the glory of Ashadha Shukla Devshayani Ekadashi and Chaturmasya. Now, please tell me the name of the Shravan Krishna Ekadashi.'

Verse 2

Lord Shri Krishna said, 'O Yudhishthira! The story of this Ekadashi was once told by Brahmaji himself to Devarshi Narada, and I will tell you the same. Narada had asked Brahmaji, 'O Grandfather! I wish to hear the story of the Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha of Shravan month. What is its name? What is its method, and what is its glory? Please tell me.'

Verse 3

Hearing Narada's words, Brahmaji said, 'O Narada! You have asked a very beautiful question for the welfare of the worlds. The Krishna Ekadashi of Shravan month is named Kamika. Merely by hearing about it, one obtains the fruit of a Vajapeya Yajna. On this day, Lord Vishnu, who holds the conch, discus, and mace, and whose names are Shridhar, Hari, Vishnu, Madhav, Madhusudan, is worshipped. Listen to the fruit obtained by worshipping Him.'

Verse 4

The fruit obtained from bathing in Ganga, Kashi, Naimisharanya, and Pushkar is obtained by worshipping Lord Vishnu. The fruit that is not even obtained by bathing in Kurukshetra and Kashi during solar and lunar eclipses, by donating the earth with oceans and forests, or by bathing in the Godavari and Gandaki rivers when Jupiter is in Leo, is obtained by worshipping Lord Vishnu.

Verse 5

Those who worship the Lord in Shravan, through them, all deities, Gandharvas, and the Sun are worshipped. Therefore, people who fear sins must observe the Kamika Ekadashi fast and worship Lord Vishnu. For those stuck in the mud of sin and drowned in the ocean of worldly existence, observing this Ekadashi fast and worshipping Lord Vishnu is extremely essential. There is no greater means for the destruction of sins than this.

Verse 6

O Narada! The Lord Himself has said that by observing the Kamika fast, a soul does not attain an undesirable birth. Those who devoutly offer Tulasi leaves to Lord Vishnu on this Ekadashi day remain free from all sins of this world. Lord Vishnu is not as pleased by gems, pearls, jewels, and ornaments as He is by Tulasi leaves.

Verse 7

The fruit of worshipping Tulasi leaves is equivalent to donating four measures of silver and one measure of gold. O Narada! I myself always bow to Tulasi, who is extremely dear to the Lord. By watering the Tulasi plant, all of a person's sufferings are destroyed. Merely by seeing it, all sins are destroyed, and by touching it, a person becomes pure.

Verse 8

Even Chitragupta cannot describe the glory of the fruit of offering lamps and keeping vigil on the night of Kamika Ekadashi. Those who light lamps in the Lord's temple on the night of this Ekadashi, their ancestors drink nectar in Swargaloka, and those who light lamps of ghee or oil, they go to Surya Loka, illuminated by a hundred crore lamps.

Verse 9

Brahmaji says, 'O Narada! Humans should diligently observe the fast of this Kamika Ekadashi, which destroys sins like Brahmahatya (killing a Brahmin) and foeticide. A person who listens to and reads the glory of Kamika Ekadashi fast with devotion becomes free from all sins and goes to Vishnu Loka.'

Verse 10

Please narrate the story along with its rituals. Hearing Naradji's wish, Pitamah Bhishma said: O Naradji! You have made a very beautiful proposal. Now listen to it very carefully - The Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the Shravan month is named Kamika Ekadashi. Merely by listening to the story of this Ekadashi, one attains the fruit of the Vajapeya Yajna.

Verse 11

During the fast of Kamika Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu, who holds the conch, discus, and mace, is worshipped. Those who worship Lord Vishnu on this Ekadashi with incense, lamps, offerings (naivedya), etc., attain a fruit even superior to that of bathing in the Ganges.

Verse 12

The merit obtained by bathing in Kedarnath and Kurukshetra during a solar or lunar eclipse is attained by devoutly worshipping Lord Vishnu on the day of Kamika Ekadashi.

Verse 13

The fruit of devoutly worshipping Lord Vishnu in the month of Shravan is greater than the fruit of donating the entire Earth, including its oceans and forests.

Verse 14

The fruit obtained by bathing in the Gandaki river during Vyatipata Yoga is attained by worshipping the Lord.

Verse 15

In this world, the fruit of worshipping the Lord is the greatest. Therefore, if one cannot devoutly worship the Lord, one should observe the fast of Kamika Ekadashi in the Krishna Paksha of the Shravan month.

Verse 16

The fruit obtained by donating a cow along with its calf adorned with ornaments is attained by observing the fast of Kamika Ekadashi.

Verse 17

Those excellent Brahmins who observe the fast of Kamika Ekadashi in the Krishna Paksha of Shravan month and worship Lord Vishnu, through them, all Devas, Nagas, Kinnaras, Pitrus (ancestors), etc., are worshipped. Therefore, those who fear sin should observe this fast with proper rituals.

Verse 18

Humans trapped in the ocean of worldly existence and sins should observe the fast of Kamika Ekadashi for liberation from them.

Verse 19

Even by observing the fast of Kamika Ekadashi, sins are destroyed. There is no other greater means in the world to destroy sins than this.

Verse 20

O Naradji! The Lord Himself has said that the fruit obtained by humans through spiritual knowledge is surpassed by the fruit obtained by observing the fast of Kamika Ekadashi.

Verse 21

By observing this fast, a person neither sees Yamaraj (the god of death) nor suffers the torments of hell. They become entitled to heaven.

Verse 22

Those who devoutly worship Lord Vishnu with Tulsi leaves on this day remain detached in this ocean of worldly existence, just as a lotus flower remains separate from water even while residing in it.

Verse 23

The fruit of worshipping Lord Shri Hari with Tulsi leaves is equivalent to the fruit of donating gold once and silver four times. Lord Vishnu is more pleased with Tulsi leaves than with jewels, pearls, gems, and other ornaments.

Verse 24

Those who worship the Lord with Tulsi leaves have all their sins destroyed. O Naradji! I bow to the extremely beloved Shri Tulsi Devi of the Lord.

Verse 25

Merely by seeing Tulsi Devi, all of a person's sins are destroyed, and by merely touching her body, a person becomes pure. By bathing Tulsi Devi with water, all of a person's torments from Yama are destroyed. One who devoutly offers Tulsi Devi at the lotus feet of the Lord attains liberation.

Verse 26

Those who keep vigil and offer lamps on the night of Kamika Ekadashi, even Chitragupta (the celestial record-keeper) is unable to record their merits. On Ekadashi, those who light lamps before the Lord, their ancestors drink nectar in Swargaloka (heaven).

Verse 27

Those who light a lamp of ghee or sesame oil before the Lord receive the light of thousands of lamps even in Surya Loka (the solar realm).

Verse 28

The story of Kamika Ekadashi fast! There lived a brave Kshatriya in a village. One day, for some reason, he got into a fight with a Brahmin, and the Brahmin died. The Kshatriya wanted to perform the last rites for the Brahmin who died by his hands. However, the pandits refused to let him participate in the rites. First, perform atonement and be freed from this sin, then we will dine at your house. Upon this, the Kshatriya asked what was the remedy to be freed from this sin. Then the Brahmins told him that by devoutly observing the fast and worshipping Lord Shridhar on Kamika Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Shravan, feeding Brahmins, and receiving their blessings with dakshina, he would be freed from this sin. Following the method told by the pandits, on the night of observing the fast, Lord Shridhar appeared to the Kshatriya and said that he had been freed from the sin of Brahmahathya.

Lord Krishna said - O King! Listen, I will narrate to you a sin-destroying tale, which in ancient times Brahmaji had told upon being asked by Naradji.
