शुचौ देशे समासीनो यथावत्कल्पितासनः। जितेंद्रियो जितप्राणश्चिन्तयेच्छिवमीश्वरम्॥२॥

भस्मव्याप्तांग सर्वेशं चिन्मयं सर्वतोमुखम्। सर्वविद्यामयं शांतं ईशानं द्विजुमुत्तमम्॥३॥

अष्ट हासं अष्टमूर्तिं पञ्चब्रह्म समन्वितम्। परमानन्द रूपं च सत्यज्ञानमयं शिवम्॥४॥

ध्यायन्ननेन विधिना न्यासं कुर्यात्सुसमाहितः। पञ्चपूजां ततः कृत्वा यजेद्युक्त विधानतः॥५॥

शिवामे पातु शिरसः शंकरो भालदेशकम्। नेत्रे मे पातु भूतेशः श्रुती मे पातु गोपतिः॥६॥

घ्राणं मे पातु गिरीशश्च वदनं पातु शूलभृत्। जिव्हां मे पातु सर्वज्ञो दन्तान्मे पातु कालजित्॥७॥

कण्ठं मे पातु नीलकण्ठो बाहू मे पातु वृषभाढः। हृदयो मे पातु धूर्जटिश्च जठरं मे पातु शंकरः॥८॥

स्तनौ मे पातु दक्षारिः पार्श्वौ मे पातु सर्वजित्। पृष्ठं मे पातु पिनाकी च नाभिं मे पातु विश्वधृक्॥९॥

कटिं मे पातु धर्मेश ऊरू मे पातु पातकहृत्। जंघे मे पातु भूतेशः पादौ मे पातु चंद्रजित्॥१०॥

सर्वांगं मे पातु सर्वात्मा सर्वायुष्यकरो विभुः। अंतरे पातु विश्वेशो बहिरंगं महेश्वरः॥११॥

पूर्वमे पातु विरूपाक्षो दक्षिणे पातु शंकरः। पश्चिमे पातु विश्वेशो उत्तरे पातु नीलकण्ठः॥१२॥

ऊर्ध्वं मे पातु देवेशो अधस्तात्पातु वामदेवः। पार्श्वयोर्मे पातु दिगीशो संहारश्च चतुर्दिशम्॥१३॥

जलस्थं पातु नक्रारिर्वने मे पातु गिरिजेशः। रणें मे पातु वीरेशो मार्गे मे पातु शूलभृत्॥१४॥

सर्वकालमव्यादात्मानं विश्वनाथो ममेश्वरः। य इदं कवचमधीते श्रद्धया स समाहितः॥१५॥

न तस्य जायते पीडा न भयं न पराजयः। शत्रवो नाशमायान्ति पापानि विलयं तथा॥१६॥

भूतप्रेतपिशाचाश्च यक्षराक्षसगुह्यकाः। नश्यन्ति दर्शनात्तस्य ब्रह्मास्त्राणि न संशयः॥१७॥

शूचिर्विक्रमशाली च ब्रह्मतेजो निधिरपि। मुक्ता भवति लोके स यस्य चित्तं शिवे स्थितम्॥१८॥

नारी वाथ नरः स्तोत्रं पठित्वा याति सद्गतिम्। लभते पुत्रपौत्रादि धनधान्यं यशो लभेत्॥१९॥

जायते रोगरहितश्चिरकालं स जीवति। मुक्ता स भवति लोके स यस्य चित्तं शिवे स्थितम्॥२०॥

ब्रह्महत्त्या सहस्राणि गोहत्यायुतकोटयः। हरन्ति दर्शनात्तस्य सर्वपापघ्नमीश्वरम्॥२१॥

Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
For this great mantra of the Shiva Kavacham Stotra, Rishabha Yogishwara is the Rishi (seer). Anushtup is the Chhanda (meter). The revered Sambasadashiva is the Devata (deity). Om is the Bija (seed syllable). Namah is the Shakti (power). Shivaya is the Kilakam (pivot). This recitation is undertaken to please Sambasadashiva.

I bow to Shambhu, the husband of Uma, who has adamantine teeth, three eyes, a dark throat, is the vanquisher of enemies, and possesses a thousand immensely powerful arms.

Sri Markandeya said:

Having bowed to Mahadeva, the all-pervading Lord, I shall now declare the Shiva Kavacha, which is the very form of Shiva and grants all protection to human beings.

Seated in a pure place, on a properly prepared seat, with senses subdued and breath controlled, one should meditate on Shiva, the Lord.
Verse 8
Meditate on the Lord, whose body is smeared with sacred ash, who is consciousness incarnate, all-pervading, the embodiment of all knowledge, peaceful, the supreme ruler, and the best among the twice-born.
Verse 9
Meditate on Shiva, who has eight laughs (aspects), eight forms, who is endowed with the five Brahmas (facets), whose form is supreme bliss, and who is the essence of truth and knowledge.
Verse 10
Meditating by this method, one should perform Nyasa with full concentration. Then, after performing the Pancha Puja (fivefold worship), one should worship according to the prescribed rites.

May Shiva protect my head; Shankara protect my forehead. May Bhutesha protect my eyes; may Gopati protect my ears.

May Nilakantha protect my throat; may Vrishabhadha protect my arms. May Dhurjati protect my heart; and Shankara protect my stomach.
Verse 15
May Dakshari protect my breasts; may Sarvajit protect my sides. May Pinaki protect my back; and Vishvadhrik protect my navel.
Verse 16
May Dharmesha protect my waist; may Patakahrit protect my thighs. May Bhutesha protect my shanks; and Chandrajit protect my feet.
Verse 17
May Sarvatma, the all-pervading Lord, grant long life and protect all my limbs. May Visvesha protect my inner self; and Maheshwara protect my outer self.
Verse 18
May Virupaksha protect me in the East; may Shankara protect me in the South. May Visvesha protect me in the West; and Nilakantha protect me in the North.
Verse 19
May Devesha protect me above; may Vamadeva protect me below. May Digisha protect my sides; and Samhara protect me in all four directions.
Verse 20
May Nakrari protect me in water; may Girijesha protect me in the forest. May Vireśa protect me in battle; and Shulabhrit protect me on my path.

May Vishvanatha, my Lord, protect my soul at all times. Whoever studies this Kavacha with faith and concentration...

...for him, there arises no suffering, no fear, no defeat. Enemies are destroyed, and sins likewise dissolve.

Ghosts, evil spirits, ghouls, Yakshas, Rakshasas, and Guhyakas — all are destroyed by his mere sight, and even Brahma-astras (divine weapons) are rendered ineffective; there is no doubt about this.

He who has his mind fixed on Shiva becomes pure, valorous, a treasure of spiritual radiance, and attains liberation in this world.
Verse 25
Whether a woman or a man, by reciting this stotra, attains a good destiny. They obtain sons, grandsons, wealth, grain, and glory.

He becomes free from disease and lives for a long time. He attains liberation in this world whose mind is fixed on Shiva.
Verse 27
Thousands of Brahmana-killings and tens of millions of cow-killings – all such sins are destroyed by merely seeing that devotee who worships the Lord, the destroyer of all sins.
