नागेन्द्रहाराय त्रिलोचनाय भस्माङ्गरागाय महेश्वराय । नित्याय शुद्धाय दिगम्बराय तस्मै “न” काराय नमः शिवाय ॥

मन्दाकिनीसलिलचन्दनचर्चिताय नन्दीश्वरप्रमथनाथमहेश्वराय । मन्दारपुष्पबहुपुष्पसुपूजिताय तस्मै “म” काराय नमः शिवाय ॥

शिवाय गौरीवदनाब्जवृन्दसूर्याय दक्षाध्वरनाशकाय । श्रीनीलकण्ठाय वृषध्वजाय तस्मै “शि” काराय नमः शिवाय ॥

वसिष्ठकुम्भोद्भवगौतमार्यमुनीन्द्रदेवार्चितशेखराय । चन्द्रार्कवैश्वानरलोचनाय तस्मै “वा” काराय नमः शिवाय ॥

यक्षस्वरूपाय जटाधराय पिनाकहस्ताय सनातनाय । दिव्याय देवाय दिगम्बराय तस्मै “य” काराय नमः शिवाय ॥

पञ्चाक्षरमिदं पुण्यं यः पठेच्छिवसन्निधौ । शिवलोकमावाप्नोति शिवेन सह मोदते ॥

Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
Salutations to Shiva, who wears the king of serpents as a garland, who has three eyes, whose body is smeared with sacred ashes, who is the Great Lord. He is eternal, pure, and clothed by the directions (sky-clad). Salutations to that 'Na' syllable.
Verse 2
Salutations to Shiva, who is worshipped with the waters of the Mandakini river and sandalwood paste, who is the Lord of Nandi and the chief of the Ganas (celestial attendants), who is the Great Lord. He is adorned and worshipped with many flowers like Mandara. Salutations to that 'Ma' syllable.
Verse 3
Salutations to Shiva, who is auspicious, who is like the sun to the lotus-like face of Gauri (Parvati), who destroyed Daksha's sacrifice. He has a blue throat (Nilakantha) and whose emblem is a bull. Salutations to that 'Shi' syllable.

Salutations to Shiva, whose head is worshipped by great sages like Vasishtha, Agastya (Kumbhodbhava), and Gautama, and by the gods. He has the moon, sun, and fire as His three eyes. Salutations to that 'Va' syllable.
