Meaning & Translation

For this Shri Ganesha Kavach, Sage Narada is the Rishi; Anushtubh is the meter; Shri Mahaganapati is the deity; 'Gam' is the seed-mantra; 'Gim' is the power; 'Gum' is the pivot. It is recited for the pleasure of Shri Ganesha.

I meditate on the elephant-faced God, who shines like molten gold. He has four arms, a massive body, tusks, and a large belly. He has fan-like ears, wears red garments, is adorned with red garlands, smeared with red sandalwood paste, and worshipped with red flowers. I always worship that compassionate God, the cause of all causes in the universe, the lord of obstacles, who removes all fears.

Narada said: Once, Narada asked Shankara, the ocean of bliss: O great-minded one, please tell me the Kavach (armor) of Lord Ganesha.
Verse 2
Shankara said: Listen, I will tell you the Kavach, which grants all accomplishments. By reciting or wearing it, one is liberated from all sins.

Salutations to Ganesha, may He always protect my head. The elephant-faced one, the giver of success, may He protect my forehead.

May Vighnesha protect my eyes; may Gananayaka protect my ears. May Gananatha protect my teeth; may Saraswati (the goddess of speech, invoked through Ganesha) protect my tongue.

May Virupaksha protect my mouth; may Lambodara protect my nose. May Vighnesha protect my chin; may Gajanana protect my lips.

May Vikata protect my throat; may Vinayaka protect my shoulders. May Mahakaya protect my arms; may Varaprada protect my hands.

May Siddhesha protect my chest; may Gajanana protect my sides. May Lambodara protect my abdomen; may Mahodara protect my waist.

May Heramba protect my thighs; may Kamada protect my knees. May Gananatha protect my shins; may Ganeshwara protect my feet.

May the divine Ganadhipa always protect all my limbs. May Vighnesha protect me in the East; may Dhumaketu protect me in the Southeast (Agneya).

May Siddhidata protect me in the South; and Gajanana in the Southwest (Nairritya). May Heramba protect me in the West; and Vikata in the Northwest (Vayavya).

May Vighnesha protect me in the North; and Vinayaka in the Northeast (Ishanya). May Ganadhyaksha protect me above; and Lambodara protect me below.

One desiring a son obtains a son; one desiring wealth obtains wealth. One desiring knowledge obtains knowledge; one desiring liberation obtains liberation.

Ghosts, spirits, vampires, Brahma-rakshasas, and demons flee far away by the grace of this Kavach.
