Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
Om. For this great sacred hymn of Shiva Kavach, the sage is Brahma, the meter is Anushtup, the deity is Shri Sadashiva Rudra. Haridra is the Shakti (power), Hrim is the Kilakam (pivot). It is chanted for attaining the blessings of Sadashiva.
Verse 2
Dhyana (Meditation): I meditate on Shiva, whose teeth are like thunderbolts, who has three eyes, a blue throat, and is the destroyer of enemies. He has a thousand arms, is exceedingly unique like a million moons. His face is fierce with fangs, adorned with serpent ornaments. He wears a tiger skin as garments, and is resplendent with a garland of skulls.
Verse 3
Om, Salutations to Lord Sadashiva. Who is the very essence of all principles, the embodiment of all mantras. Who presides over all elements, who is supreme in all tantras. The God of all gods, Om Namah Shivaya.
Verse 4
To Him whose banner bears the bull, who wears a tiger skin as garment. Salutations to the Great God. To Him who is without beginning, middle, or end, who is pure consciousness. Who is without parts, without comparison, full of effulgence. Salutations to the beginningless, endless one.
Verse 5
Salutations to Sadashiva, the Lord of all elements, the Supreme Brahman, the embodiment of the witness. May your five faces – the northern, eastern, southern, western, and the one below (Urdu-Mukha) – protect me in all directions.
Verse 6
Salutations to Pranava (Om). Salutations to Omkara. Salutations to the Lord of the Universe. Salutations to the Great God. Salutations to the Cosmic Form. Salutations to Pashupati (Lord of all beings).
Verse 7
Salutations to Thee, O Lord, the Lord of the Universe, the Great God, the Three-Eyed one, the Destroyer of the three cities. Who is the fire of the three times, the fierce Rudra of the fire of time, the Blue-Throated one, the Conqueror of Death.
Verse 8
Salutations to Sarveshwara, Sadashiva, the glorious Mahadeva. May Shankara protect my head, Chandrashekhara (moon-crested) my forehead. May Girisha (Lord of mountains) protect the center of my brows, and Shiva my eyes.
Verse 9
May Mahadeva protect my nose, Ganeshwara (Lord of Ganas) my mouth. May Pinaki (wielder of Pinaka bow) protect my ears, and Vrishabhadhwaja (one with bull banner) my tongue.
Verse 10
May Neelkanta (blue-throated) protect my neck, Pramathadhipa (chief of Ganas) my arms. May Bhava protect my chest, and Shankara my heart.
Verse 11
May Sarvesha protect my abdomen, Parvatipriya (beloved of Parvati) my navel. May Virupaksha (odd-eyed one) protect my waist, and Maheshwara my reproductive organ.
Verse 12
May Viswesha (Lord of the Universe) protect my thighs, Pinaki my knees. May Bhutesha (Lord of beings) protect my shins, and Pramathadhipa my feet.
Verse 13
May Sarvaga (all-pervading) protect my toes, and Shiva always protect all my limbs. This divine Kavach, whoever recites it in the presence of Shiva,
Verse 14
Attains all desired objects and becomes victorious everywhere. A Brahmachari (celibate student) or a Grihastha (householder) who recites it with effort and faith,
Verse 15
He undoubtedly attains great accomplishments in a short time.
Verse 16
Thus, the Shiva Kavach from the glorious Rudrayamala Tantra is complete.
