ઋષિ બોલ્યા- હે સૂત! પૂર્વે મહાપાપી દંડક નામે અસુર હતો, તે ભગવાન શિવની ભક્તિ કરી અમર થયો હતો. તે મને કહો કે જેથી મને પણ મહાદેવની ભક્તિ કરવાથી પાપનાશ થાય.

સૂત બોલ્યા- એકવાર ભગવાન શિવની સભામાં સિદ્ધો અને દેવતાઓ બેઠા હતા ત્યારે મહામુનિ માર્કડેય મુનિએ શિવનું સ્તવન કર્યું.

માર્કડેય બોલ્યા- હે મહાદેવ! હે શંકર! હે શંભુ! તમે કલ્યાણકારી અને કરુણાના સાગર છો, સર્વજ્ઞ છો, ભક્તવત્સલ છો, શક્તિમાન છો. તમારા સિવાય મને કોણ રક્ષા કરી શકે?

શિવો મે પાતુ મસ્તકમ, ભૃમધ્યં મે ત્રિલોચનઃ। લલાટં મે ચંદ્રમૌલિ, શ્રુતિ શિવ શંભુરાવી॥

ઘ્રાણં મે ગિરિજાનન્દી, મુખં મે ચંદ્રશેખરઃ। જિહ્વાં મે વાગીશ્વરો, ગ્રીવાં મે નીલકંઠકઃ॥

બાહૂ મે ભુજંગેશો, હસ્તૌ મે ગિરિજાપતિઃ। વક્ષઃસ્થલં મે પાર્વતીશઃ, હૃદયં મે ભુજંગેશ્વરઃ॥

કટિં મે કામનાશાય, ગુહ્યં મે ગુહાશાયકઃ। ઉદરં મે વૃષભધ્વજઃ, પાર્શ્વે મે દક્ષિણામૂર્તિઃ॥

પૃષ્ઠં મે શિવપ્રીતિકરઃ, જંઘે મે જટાધરઃ। પાદૌ મે સર્વદેવેષઃ, સર્વાંગં મે સદાશિવઃ॥

ધનં ધાન્યં ચ મે નિત્યં, પાતુ સર્વાંગધારિણઃ। પત્નીપુત્રાન મે રક્ષેત્, સર્વદા શિવશંકરઃ॥
15
ઈદં કવચમમૃતં, સર્વપાપવિનાશનમ્। સર્વદા કીર્તિદં પુણ્યં, સર્વસંપત્પ્રદાયકમ્॥

યઃ પઠેત્ પ્રાતરૂત્થાય, સર્વાન્ કામ સમશ્નુતે। ધન્યં યશસ્યમાયુષ્યં, પુત્રપૌત્રાભિવર્ધનમ્॥

આત્મૌષધમિતિ જ્ઞાત્વા, સર્વદા ધારયેન્નરઃ। તસ્મૈ શિવઃ પ્રસન્નઃ સ્યાત્, સર્વસિદ્ધિપ્રદાયકઃ॥

ઈતિ શ્રીમહાભારતે દ્રોણપર્વણિ શ્રી શિવ કવચં સંપૂર્ણમ્॥

Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
The Rishi said - O Suta! Earlier, there was a great sinner demon named Dandaka, who became immortal by devotion to Lord Shiva. Tell me that story, so that by devotion to Mahadeva, my sins may also be destroyed.
Verse 2
Suta said - Once, in the assembly of Lord Shiva, Siddhas and Devas were seated, when the great sage Markandeya Muni praised Shiva.
Verse 3
Markandeya said - O Mahadeva! O Shankara! O Shambhu! You are benevolent and an ocean of compassion, omniscient, loving to devotees, and powerful. Who else can protect me except you?
Verse 4
Shri Markandeya said: Om, Salutations to Hara Hara Mahadeva (Lord Shiva).
Verse 5
Meditation: (Meditate on Shiva) who resides on the peak of the jewel mountain, seated on a jeweled throne. He is surrounded by peacocks and other liberated beings.
Verse 6
He is surrounded by divine maidens holding whisks, clad in the skin of a mighty elephant, and adorned with jeweled earrings.
Verse 7
He is adorned with sparkling earrings that emit brilliant rays of light. Salutations to the auspicious Shiva, whose half body is beloved by Gauri, and who is fair-complexioned.
Verse 8
Shri Markandeya said: Om Salutations to Shiva, (this) Kavacha (shield) with the seed sound 'Vam' and 'Hum'.
Verse 9
May Shiva protect my head, may the three-eyed one protect my forehead's center. May the one with the moon on his head protect my forehead, and Shiva Shambhu protect my ears.
Verse 10
May Girija's beloved protect my nose, may Chandrashekhara protect my mouth. May the lord of speech protect my tongue, and Nilakantha protect my neck.
Verse 11
May the lord of serpents protect my arms, may Girija's husband protect my hands. May Parvati's lord protect my chest, and the lord of serpents protect my heart.
Verse 12
May the destroyer of desires protect my waist, may the dweller in the cave protect my secret parts. May the one with the bull banner protect my belly, and Dakshinamurti protect my sides.
Verse 13
May the one who pleases Shiva protect my back, may the matted-haired one protect my thighs. May the lord of all gods protect my feet, and Sadashiva protect my entire body.
Verse 14
May the one who holds all forms protect my wealth and grains always. May Shivashankara always protect my wife and children.
Verse 15
This immortal Kavacha destroys all sins. It always bestows fame, merit, and all kinds of wealth.
Verse 16
Whoever recites this after waking up in the morning attains all desires. It grants wealth, fame, longevity, and increases progeny and grandchildren.
Verse 17
Knowing this as an elixir for the soul, one should always wear it (or keep it close). To such a person, Shiva becomes pleased and bestows all accomplishments.
Verse 18
Thus, in the Shri Mahabharata, in the Drona Parva, the complete Shri Shiva Kavacham.
