त्वं वाङ्मयस्त्वं चिन्मयः। त्वमानन्दमयस्त्वं ब्रह्ममयः। त्वं सच्चिदानन्दाद्वितीयोऽसि। त्वं प्रत्यक्षं ब्रह्मासि। त्वं ज्ञानमयो विज्ञानमयोऽसि॥४॥

सर्वं जगदिदं त्वत्तो जायते। सर्वं जगदिदं त्वत्तस्तिष्ठति। सर्वं जगदिदं त्वयि लयमेष्यति। सर्वं जगदिदं त्वयि प्रत्येति। त्वं भूमिरापोऽनलोऽनिलो नभः। त्वं चत्वारि वाक्पदानि॥५॥

त्वं गुणत्रयातीतः। त्वं देहत्रयातीतः। त्वं कालत्रयातीतः। त्वं मूलाधारस्थितोऽसि नित्यम्। त्वं शक्तित्रयात्मकः। त्वां योगिनो ध्यायन्ति नित्यम्। त्वं ब्रह्मा त्वं विष्णुस्त्वं रुद्रस्त्वमिन्द्रस्त्वमग्निस्त्वं वायुस्त्वं सूर्यस्त्वं चन्द्रमास्त्वं ब्रह्मभूर्भुवःस्वरोम्॥६॥

गणादिं पूर्वमुच्चार्य वर्णादिं तदनन्तरम्। अनुस्वारः परतरः। अर्धेन्दुलसितम्। तारेण ऋद्धम्। एतत्तव मनुस्वरूपम्॥७॥

गकारः पूर्वरूपम्। अकारो मध्यमरूपम्। अनुस्वारश्चान्त्यरूपम्। बिन्दुत्तररूपम्। नादः संधानम्। संहिता सन्धिः। सैषा गणेशविद्या। गणक ऋषिः। निचृद्गायत्रीच्छन्दः। गणपतिर्देवता। ॐ गं गणपतये नमः॥८॥

एकदन्तं चतुर्हस्तं पाशमङ्कुशधारिणम्। रदं च वरदं हस्तैर्बिभ्राणं मूषकध्वजम्॥९॥

रक्तं लंबोदरं शूर्पकर्णकं रक्तवाससम्। रक्तगन्धानुलिप्ताङ्गं रक्तपुष्पैः सुपूजितम्॥१०॥

भक्तानुकंपिनं देवं जगत्कारणमच्युतम्। आविर्भूतं च सृष्ट्यादौ प्रकृतेः पुरुषात्परम्॥११॥

नमो व्रातपतये नमो गणपतये नमः प्रमथपतये नमस्तेऽस्तु लंबोदरायैकदन्ताय विघ्ननाशिने शिवसुताय श्रीवरदमूर्तये नमो नमः॥१३॥

इदं अथर्वशीर्षम् अशिष्याय न देयम्। यो यदि मोहाद् दास्यति स पापीयान् भवति॥१९॥

सहस्रावर्तनात् यं यं काममधीते तं तमनेन साधयेत्॥२०॥

अनेन गणपतिमभिषिञ्चति स वाग्मी भवति॥२१॥

चतुर्थ्यामनश्नन् जपति स विद्यावान् भवति॥२२॥

इत्यथर्वणवाक्यम्। ब्रह्माद्यवरं विद्यात् न बिभेति कदाचनेति॥२३॥

यो दुर्वांकुरैर्यजति स वैश्रवणोपमो भवति। यो लाजैर्यजति स यशोवान् भवति। यो मोदकसहस्रेण यजति स वांछितफलमवाप्नोति। यः साज्यसमिद्भिर्यजति स सर्वं लभते स सर्वं लभते॥२४॥

अष्टौ ब्राह्मणान् सम्यग् ग्राहयित्वा सूर्यवर्चस्वी भवति। महागणपतेः संनिधौ जप्त्वा सर्वविघ्नात् प्रमुच्यते महागणपतेः संनिधौ जप्त्वा सर्वसिद्धिं लभते॥२५॥

Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
Om, O Gods, may we hear auspicious things with our ears; may we see auspicious things with our eyes, O worthy of worship. With steady limbs and bodies, praising you, may we enjoy the life allotted by the Gods.
Verse 2
Om, Salutations to You, O Lord Ganesha. You are the visible Reality. You alone are the Creator. You alone are the Sustainer. You alone are the Destroyer. You are verily all this Brahman. You are the direct Self, eternally.
Verse 3
I speak the Divine Law (Ṛtam). I speak the Truth (Satyam).
Verse 4
Protect me. Protect the speaker. Protect the listener. Protect the giver. Protect the supporter. Protect the student. Protect from the West. Protect from the East. Protect from the North. Protect from the South. Protect from above. Protect from below. Protect me from all sides, from everywhere.
Verse 5
You are composed of speech, you are composed of consciousness. You are composed of bliss, you are composed of Brahman. You are the non-dual existence-consciousness-bliss. You are the visible Brahman. You are full of knowledge and wisdom.
Verse 6
All this universe originates from You. All this universe is sustained by You. All this universe dissolves into You. All this universe returns to You. You are earth, water, fire, air, and ether. You are the four forms of speech (Para, Pashyanti, Madhyama, Vaikhari).

You transcend the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas). You transcend the three bodies (gross, subtle, causal). You transcend the three times (past, present, future). You are eternally situated in the Mooladhara Chakra. You are the essence of the three Shaktis (Ichha, Jnana, Kriya). Yogis meditate upon You eternally. You are Brahma, You are Vishnu, You are Rudra, You are Indra, You are Agni, You are Vayu, You are Surya, You are Chandrama. You are the three worlds (Bhur, Bhuvah, Svah) and Om.
Verse 8
First enunciate 'Ga' (ग), then the first letter 'a' (अ), followed by the Anusvara (ं). This (Gaṁ) is adorned with the crescent moon and enhanced by Om. This is Your mantra form.

The letter 'Ga' (ग) is the initial form. The letter 'a' (अ) is the middle form. The Anusvara (ं) is the final form. The Bindu is the succeeding form. The Nada (sound vibration) is the conjunction. The Samhita (combination) is the union. This is the Ganesha Vidya (knowledge). Ganaka is the Rishi. The meter is Nichrut Gayatri. The deity is Ganapati. Om Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ (Salutations to Lord Ganesha).
Verse 10
He has one tusk, four hands, holding a noose and an elephant goad. He holds his broken tusk and shows the boon-giving gesture (Varada Mudra) in his hands, and has a mouse as his emblem.
Verse 11
He is red in complexion, has a large belly, ears like winnowing baskets, and wears red garments. His body is anointed with red sandal paste, and He is worshipped with red flowers.
Verse 12
He is the compassionate God towards His devotees, the eternal cause of the universe. He manifests at the beginning of creation, transcending both Prakriti (matter) and Purusha (consciousness).
Verse 13
Whoever meditates on Him in this manner daily, that Yogi is the best among Yogis.
Verse 14
Salutations to the Lord of Hosts (Vratapati), Salutations to Ganapati, Salutations to the Lord of Ganas (Pramathapati). Salutations to You, O Lord with a pot belly (Lambodara), with one tusk (Ekadanta), the Destroyer of Obstacles (Vighnanāśine), the Son of Shiva (Śivasutāya), the giver of boons (Varadamūrtaye). Salutations again and again!
Verse 15
Whoever studies this Atharvashirsha becomes worthy of Brahman-realization.
Verse 16
He is not hindered by any obstacles.
Verse 17
He prospers with happiness everywhere.
Verse 18
One who recites it in the evening destroys the sins committed during the day. One who recites it in the morning destroys the sins committed during the night. One who recites it both in the morning and evening becomes free from sin.
Verse 19
He attains Dharma (righteousness), Artha (wealth), Kama (desires), and Moksha (liberation).
Verse 20
This Atharvashirsha should not be given to an undeserving student. If anyone gives it out of delusion, he becomes a sinner.
Verse 21
By reciting it a thousand times, one achieves whatever desire one has.
Verse 22
One who performs Abhishekam (ritual bathing) of Ganapati with this becomes eloquent.
Verse 23
One who chants this on Chaturthi (the fourth day of the lunar fortnight) while fasting becomes knowledgeable.
Verse 24
Thus says the Atharvana text. One who knows Brahma (as the supreme) never fears anything.
Verse 25
One who worships with Durva grass becomes like Kubera (the god of wealth). One who worships with parched rice attains fame. One who worships with a thousand Modaks attains desired results. One who worships with clarified butter and sacrificial wood obtains everything, indeed obtains everything.
Verse 26
By properly teaching it to eight Brahmins, one becomes as radiant as the sun. By chanting near the great Ganapati, one is freed from all obstacles. By chanting near the great Ganapati, one attains all perfections (siddhis).
