अथ श्री गणेश व्रत कथा प्रारम्भः॥

एकदा भगवान श्रीकृष्णः धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरं प्रति कथयति स्म यत् संकष्टी चतुर्थी व्रतस्य माहात्म्यं श्रुणु।

युधिष्ठिर उवाच - हे देव! कोऽयं गणेशः? कथं तस्य पूजा क्रियते? कथं च अस्य व्रतस्य उत्पत्तिः अभवत्?

श्रीकृष्ण उवाच - हे कुन्तीपुत्र! आदौ पार्वतीदेवी स्नानाय गता। तस्याः देहमलात् एकं पुरुषं निर्मितवती।

तं द्वारपालं कृत्वा आज्ञापयत् यत् 'मम आज्ञां विना कोऽपि अत्र न प्रविशेत्'।

अन्तराले भगवान् शंकरः तत्र आगच्छत्। द्वारे स्थितेन बालकेन सः अवरुद्धः।

बालकः पितरं शंकरं न जानाति स्म। अतः सः तम् अन्तः प्रवेष्टुं न दत्तवान्।

एतेन क्रोधितः शंकरः तस्य मस्तकं छिन्नवान्।

पार्वती एतत् ज्ञात्वा दुःखिता अभवत्। सा शंकरं अकुर्वत् यत् 'मम पुत्रं जीवयतु'।

शंकरः ततः गजाननं मस्तकं तस्योपरि स्थापितवान्। तेन बालकः जीवतः अभवत्।

देवाः तस्य स्तुतिं चक्रुः यत् 'त्वं सर्वेषु देवेषु प्रथमपूज्यः भव'।

तदा प्रभृति सः गणेशः इति नाम्ना प्रसिद्धः अभवत्। यः कश्चित् तस्य पूजां करोति, तस्य कार्याणि निर्विघ्नं सिध्यन्ति।

अद्य संकष्टी चतुर्थी। अस्य व्रतस्य करणेन सर्वदुःखानि नश्यन्ति, सर्वसुखानि च प्राप्यन्ते।

पुरा कदाचित् चन्द्रदेवः स्वसौन्दर्येण गर्वितः अभवत्। सः गणेशं दृष्ट्वा उपहसितवान्।

गणेशः तस्य गर्वं दृष्ट्वा क्रोधितः अभवत्। सः शशाप यत् 'त्वं क्षयग्रस्तः भव' इति।

चन्द्रः शापात् भीतः अभवत्। सः गणेशं क्षमापयत्।

गणेशः अवदत् यत् 'मासि एकवारं चतुर्थीतिथौ यः त्वां द्रक्ष्यति, सः दोषभागी भविष्यति'।

ततः परं चन्द्रः तपस्यां कर्तुं आरब्धवान्। सः शिवं प्रार्थितवान् शापविमोचनार्थम्।

शिवः अवदत् यत् 'चन्द्र! त्वं गणेशस्य संकष्टी चतुर्थी व्रतस्य आचरणं कुरु'।

चन्द्रः शिवस्य आज्ञां पालयित्वा व्रतमाचरत्। व्रतप्रभावात् सः शापमुक्तः अभवत्।

अतः यः कश्चित् संकष्टी चतुर्थी व्रतमाचरति, सः सर्वदोषेभ्यः मुक्तो भूत्वा सुखं लभते।

एवं कथां श्रुत्वा युधिष्ठिरः प्रसन्नो भूत्वा गणेशं पूजयित्वा सर्वदुःखेभ्यः मुक्तो अभवत्।

संकष्टी चतुर्थी व्रतस्य फलं महान् अस्ति। अस्य व्रतेन दारिद्र्यं नश्यति, धनधान्यं च वर्धते।

यः निष्ठापूर्वकं इदं व्रतमाचरति, तस्य सर्वमनोरथाः पूर्णाः भवन्ति।

पुत्रकामैः पुत्रं, धनकामैः धनं, विद्याकामैः विद्यां, आरोग्यकामैः आरोग्यं च लभ्यते।

संकटेषु स्मरणं मात्रेण विघ्नानि दूरीभवन्ति।

नारद उवाच - इति ते कथितं देव संकष्टी व्रतमुत्तमम्।

यः शृणोति पठेद्वापि स याति परमां गतिम्॥
30
इति श्री गणेश पुराणान्तर्गता संकष्टी चतुर्थी व्रत कथा समाप्ता॥

Meaning & Translation

Verse 1
Om, Salutations to Lord Ganesha.
Verse 2
Now begins the sacred story of Ganesha Vrat.
Verse 3
Once, Lord Krishna said to Dharmaraja Yudhishthira, 'Listen to the glory of the Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat.'
Verse 4
Yudhishthira asked, 'O Lord! Who is this Ganesha? How is He worshipped? And how did this Vrat originate?'
Verse 5
Shri Krishna replied, 'O son of Kunti! Once, Goddess Parvati went for a bath. From the impurities of her body, she created a male figure.'
Verse 6
Making him a doorkeeper, she commanded, 'No one should enter here without my permission.'
Verse 7
Meanwhile, Lord Shankara (Shiva) arrived there. He was stopped by the boy standing at the door.
Verse 8
The boy did not know his father Shankara. Therefore, he did not allow him to enter.
Verse 9
Angered by this, Shankara severed his head.
Verse 10
Parvati, knowing this, became saddened. She pleaded with Shankara, 'Revive my son!'
Verse 11
Shankara then placed an elephant head upon him. By this, the boy became alive.
Verse 12
The gods praised him, saying, 'You shall be the first worshipped among all gods.'
Verse 13
From that time onwards, he became famous by the name Ganesha. Whoever worships him, their tasks are accomplished without hindrance.
Verse 14
Today is Sankashti Chaturthi. By observing this Vrat, all sorrows are destroyed, and all joys are attained.
Verse 15
Once upon a time, Chandra Deva (the Moon God) became proud of his beauty. He laughed upon seeing Ganesha.
Verse 16
Ganesha, seeing his arrogance, became angry. He cursed him, saying, 'You shall be afflicted with decay!'
Verse 17
Chandra became afraid of the curse. He begged Ganesha for forgiveness.
Verse 18
Ganesha said, 'Once a month, on the Chaturthi Tithi, whoever sees you will be a partaker of sin.'
Verse 19
Thereafter, Chandra began to perform penance. He prayed to Shiva for liberation from the curse.
Verse 20
Shiva said, 'Chandra! You should observe the Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat of Ganesha.'
Verse 21
Chandra, obeying Shiva's command, observed the Vrat. By the power of the Vrat, he became free from the curse.
Verse 22
Therefore, whoever observes the Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat becomes free from all faults and attains happiness.
Verse 23
Thus, hearing this story, Yudhishthira became pleased, worshipped Ganesha, and became free from all sorrows.
Verse 24
The fruit of Sankashti Chaturthi Vrat is great. By this Vrat, poverty is destroyed, and wealth and grains increase.
Verse 25
Whoever observes this Vrat with devotion, all their desires are fulfilled.
Verse 26
Those desiring a son get a son, those desiring wealth get wealth, those desiring knowledge get knowledge, and those desiring health get health.
Verse 27
In times of trouble, by mere remembrance, obstacles are removed.
Verse 28
Narada said - Thus, O Lord, I have narrated the supreme Sankashti Vrat to you.
Verse 29
Whoever listens to or recites it attains the supreme state.
